Scrap that. I'm being stupid. The nuts for my alloys are nuts! I was thinking from memory as I'm not near my landy ATM.
Any links to recommended steel wheel nuts? Thanks 🙂 |

Standard LR steel wheel nuts are fine but if you want to treat yourself...

Note that the standard wheel nuts for alloy wheels are different to the standard wheel nuts for steel wheels.

Whilst maybe not exactly this brand, these are the sorts of nuts I'm talking about. Same as the chrome ones that hold my 18" Bowlers on....

These are alloy wheel nuts and are not suitable for steel wheels. Darren

This is why I asked, as I’ve seen this one bimbling around locally. Couldn’t get close enough to know if they’re alloy nuts or standard nuts with some sort of cap? But look straight alloy to me.... Those look like the standard LR alloy nuts. They will hold a steel wheel on (they are designed to be used with a steel spare on a Discovery, which many had ex-factory) but IMHO they look stupid on a steel wheel and very much temporary! ---

Yeah, I wouldn't use those for steel wheels. Alloy nuts have a different end profile to steel ones and whilst they'll physically nail a wheel to a hub, I wouldn't be comfortable using them for any distance. Darren

My LR alloy wheel nuts have a conical face on the end which is exactly the same as the bare steel wheel nuts. Perfectly safe for permanent use on steel wheels, but very ugly
Edit, mine are like this. The conical end is the exact same profile and designed for use on steel or alloy wheels The flat bottomed type alloy wheel nuts are only suitable for alloy wheels. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Hmm, I thought the cones were different profiles ? I remember deliberately carrying both steel and alloy nuts to accommodate mixing and matching wheels when I had a trailer on steel wheels and a Discovery on alloys. It was fifteen years ago though, so I may be mis-remembering the reason Darren

LRA ... all I can say is that Land Rover used to ship the 300Tdi Discoverys from the factory with four alloys and a steel spare, and the only nuts supplied were the alloy ones, so they obviously expect the alloy nuts to be acceptable for holding a steel wheel on safely. ---
