New cap and rotor arm fitted. Now it won't start at all.
There is a spark at the plugs and there is fuel, timing is set at approx 9 degrees before TDC.
Refitted original cap and rotor, still won't start.
At least with a complete failure to start it shouldn't be impossible to isolate the fault. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Worst possible outcome.
Walked out to it this morning, intending to nail it once and for all.
Put keys in ignition, turned it on, gave it time to pump some fuel up to the carbs, thought to give it one try just to see what happened.
Of course it started and has run faultlessly in the subsequent 200 mile road test. This with original cap and rotor.
Oh and the difference between black or blue distributor caps? The blue cap is a marginally tighter fit. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Not what you need.

Any idea what the issue was then and why it didn't start first time round?

Not a clue.
It has started and run fruitlessly ever since, which is very unhelpful.
I hate it when a problem ceases without any obvious fault being found or rectified. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten
