Morning all,
I am contemplating buying some stainless steel hinges for my defender to finally be rid of the rust streaks, but don't much like the polished or brushed finish. Has anyone painted theirs and how did you find the adhesion/longevity of the paint. I have been looking at the arc rite etch primer which it says is designed for galvanised/stainless steel. I used this on stainless steel bolt heads prior to a body colour top coat, it is available in a rattle can too... 
The product description states …..' for difficult substrates such as galvanised steel and aluminium'.... My parts are 4 years old now and all good  SKIP

My front door hinges are the stainless steel hinges that SP4x4 were selling a couple of years back. They came in a high gloss piano black finish. But they weren't able to supply a matching set for the 2nd row doors so a few months later I persuaded the seller to split these https://www.powerfuluk.com/land-rover-defe...ished.html and sell me just the 2nd row hinges. As I'd previously had good results with smooth Hammerite rattle cans (and had one on the shelf) I used that on the 2nd row set. It did a good job and looked just like the front hinges. So far (about a year) all is still fine, but where one has taken a knock the paint has chipped and revealed the shiny metal beneath. Whether an etch primer coat would've prevented that I'll never know. |
