2.4 TDCI puma 110 loss of torque and acceleration.

Hi all, I am posting here in the hope that some knowledgeable souls on here may have some idea of how to cure yet another puma issue..

mileage : 137000 60plate MY-2011
I have had my defender for nearly two years now - i had it remapped about a year ago and performance intercooler fitted not long after. It ran and pulled like an absolute train almost up until now (erm did have a bit {lots} of expensive repairs such as transfer adapter shaft changed for ashcroft one but we'll ignore that) - however- v stupidly, recently I booted it a bit in first and second when frustrated with something a few weeks back- when i had a small trailer on with logs in it. (sub 750kg double axle bateson trailer.). It appears that my issues perhaps manifested from that point onwards.

Symptoms after towing incident: ORIGINALLY - occasional extreme loss of acceleration, occasional lumpy idle, stalled on me once just slowing down at a passing point, clutch down. V hesitant acceleration.

Symptoms now- after some work and 10000mile service : Lack of low down torque , reduced acceleration,reduced power, hesitant acceleration, poor coasting when in a high gear with clutch up, (revs drop and speed seems to reduce unevenly and more rapidly than before). Pulsing idle seems to have gone for now.. Very weak pulling away from standstill. Clutch isnt rattling as much at all anymore and doesnt feel as difficult to depress pedal. much more throttle required than before even unladen just to pull away. Just feels gutless and like its lost all its torque.

Relevant Info :

EGR valve was found to be stuck open when taken in to diagnose, was 'deleted' by local land rover specialist using patch from BAS and blanked. (my remap wasnt BAS but was by a respected alternative and had been excellent)

Fuel filter was changed at service just gone.

The wires on the turbo seem undamaged.

No DTCs/fault codes were found when my new mechanic checked yesterday using Autologic scanner.

We tried to do an injector learn and a pump learn but it didnt seem to satisfactorily complete either - refused to perform pump learn due to "possible coolant/engine temp too low" if remember correctly - but temp was bang in the middle of the required range. we tried several times- also after warming the car up further and seeing the stated temp rise further.

Current thoughts : I am wondering if it is the Suction Control Valve - some symptoms match- roughly the mileage where they tend to go- would explain the lack of DTC's.

Im going to try cleaning the MAP sensor but not overly hopeful it will make any difference.

I have a hybrid turbo, decat exhaust, heavy duty clutch, and bilsten shocks and steering damper to fit- however dont want to get them fitted if cant get to the bottom of this issue.

My gut says its fuel pressure related in some way but im not knowledgeable enough to know.

edit : think prob going to replace the MAP and MAF sensors as another potentially beneficial measure. Suction control valve and other fuel pressure related sensors also methinks.

It sounds to me like you’re going down the right route , some of those sensors won’t throw up a fault .
If it makes you feel any better I also have problems relearning the injectors and get an error thrown up but it seems to work eventually , perhaps on the 4th-5th attempt . External air temperature is a factor and it mustn’t be too cold . Pete at BAS told me to do it in a heated garage .... if only !!!

You’ve done a similar mileage to me and I had the injectors tested last year for the first time , two failed and I replaced them , it ran a lot better afterwards . I was getting a lumpy idle and poor performance .

Go with your sensors first though , SCV gets fairly gummed up and is a pain to get to but the other two are extremely straightforward to replace , also don’t forget the obvious like air filters ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Oh and do go genuine or OEM on the sensors , there are some temptingly cheap alternatives but they don’t always work as I’ve found out ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

many thanks Bluericky-theres always something with them isnt there.!

Yes injectors were mentioned in some discussions I had when this all began so they are def a possibility. nothing seemed awry on autologic though but clearly that doesnt count for much. All filters oil air and fuel were just changed at service. no improvement. Damn thing was so good before but not now.

I shall post here if/when I get some progress.

Remap was done by Paul Williams at remappingsussex. He is a Viezu approved remapping dealer. The remap has been excellent. was far improved by the addition of performance intercooler too. Sadly not atm though..

Boost pipes
Split intercooler
Air filter blocked or pipes to/from
Turbo wastegate/actuator faulty

Would be my go to thing to check first

Then

Re check fuel filter
Remove fuel filler cap (on nearly empty tank so doesn’t spill) then try as can sometimes cause a vacuum
Injector seals
Faulty throttle pedal

Would be second list to run through 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Keswick Green

I had intermittent power loss and found the harness going to the turbo actuator damaged at the rear right hand side of the engine. The wires had been chaffing against the red lifting bracket until the insulation had worn through. I repaired the wires and this fault has never ,touch wood , happened again. I also removed the bracket and secured the harness so that it wouldnt chaff again.

simple one to check. is the fuel filter fully engaged.
for months mine was fitted up to where it gets tight but not fully engaged / locked into position.
