The reason John went swirl pot off the main tank was that I think on a previous setup he had a diesel heater but all his vehicles are V8s and kept forgetting to fill up the separate tank which meant it usually ran out at the most inopportune time. With the 129 I think he managed to source a petrol heater which meant that by plumbing it in the way I described meant he never had to remember to fill it up and never ran the vehicle out of fuel.
If they did run out of fuel while camping they could just switch on the engine to refill it but then it was a conscious decision and you knew how much fuel was in the tank at the time. The very minor downside being that you could end up with a couple of litres in the swirl pot but since it was easy to empty by going under the vehicle. Mind you with a 4.6 V8 2l won't get you far Ed
