James, have you seen those shipping container homes? Folks are doing some interesting stuff with them. Single ones or multiple stacked in different ways. Everything ftom modernist to rustic cabins. Even swimming pools!

I've seen a few, my brother-in-law has just started working for a company that converts them. The last one they did was a library classroom for a school in London. The big plus is the installation on-site is all done in one day, so minimal disruption.
There was a Grand Designs using them, but apparently very difficult getting a mortgage to build using containers? I think it would appeal to many def owners mentality, if not actual desire to buy one, as it uses a lot of clever engineering and much like prepping for an overland exped, they often involve some very clever use of space, storage, tech, energy saving, bespoke craftsmanship etc. And they’re box shaped
As for containers, I think that would be ‘no’ mortgage. Bit like a houseboat, I think banks would fear they could be moved. I suppose you might get one once foundations were set and the container was permanently fixed to it. The container on Grand Designs was Kevin’s favourite building in 20 years of the show. Clearly he has good taste, as it was mine and Mrs Grenadier’s favourite as well... . When they did the revisit the guy said he was inundated with requests but that the only container building he’d done since was his own design studio. He’s an amazing architect though. https://www.pb-architects.com/ Love this sort of architecture/design. We were also lucky enough to see the Container City in Christchurch a couple of years after the earthquake. Clearly a tough reason for needing it, but ultimately very cool. Sadly they’ve removed a lot of it now and replaced it with new buildings. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Sadly the French (at least locally) don’t allow such design. But Mrs G and I are actively looking for land in the Tramantuna Mountains in Mallorca to pop on a container or two, or some pods, as our summer house. Gotta get this barn conversion done first.... James, does your brother’s company do residential? I’m trying to get a list of as many firms as possible before we take the plunge in a couple of year’s time.
