I purchased the vehicle with the intention of completing a light restoration with my grandfather. Sadly he passed away last year and I can no longer bring myself to work on it. So it's time for someone else to have the fantastic opportunity. The vehicle was built on the 29th September 1955 and retains all of it's original 17060XXXX components along with many other original, date stamped ancilliaries. I am the first registered owner of the vehicle and it sports an age correct 3 numbers 3 letters registration. The vehicle was dispatched to the Ministry of Supply, Feltham in 1955 and was not registered when demobbed in the 60s. Following this, it was used sparingly before being parked up. The odometer reads 31,401 miles which is concordant with the excellent condition of the running gear and chassis. I believe the mileage is genuine based on the above. The engine is a factory recon unit, and the original paint is still very clearly visible on the block and other components. Last year the engine had a top end rebuild with new exhaust valves, springs and head gasket. The bores were in excellent condition and the pistons appear to be the original, standard size. In the last 50 miles it has also benefited from a reconditioned solex carburettor and all new ignition wiring. It runs very sweetly. The exhaust would need fettling to fit with the larger 7.50 tyres and for this reason the back box has been removed but is included in the sale. The chassis is probably the best I've ever seen on a vehicle of this age and is incredibly solid with no unsightly previous repairs or patches, the only downside is the rear crossmember which has been torn at some point. This could be repaired or left as is. I have a replacement Radfords rear crossmember which can be negotiated as part of the sale. The body work and bulkhead are fairly straight with characteristic repainting and a few dings. The bulkhead has seen some previous repairs, these could easily be left as they are or neatened up if required. The top rail is immaculate. The brakes have been overhauled in the last 10 miles with new, correct spec shoes, brake lines and wheel cylinders. The master cylinder was also rebuilt and the brakes perform very well. The transmission is as you would expect from a 32k mile vehicle and wants for nothing except use! The seats have been replaced with later seats, however a set of genuine seat brackets and backs can be included by negotiation. The wheels shown in the photographs are a set borrowed from a friend. The vehicle will be sold on a set of mismatched series steel wheels unless a deal can be reached on the wheels prior to collection. I have a heritage certificate, receipts and other documents for the vehicle including those that relate to getting the vehicle registered for the first time. I have a video of the engine running, dozens more photos showing the condition of the chassis and bulkhead etc and would be glad to have a chat with any prospective buyer. Please call or text on 07531518611. Viewing and a test drive is actively encouraged. The vehicle is MOT and Tax exempt but is currently sorn and without MOT. I welcome reasonable offers around the asking price of £9,995. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

What's the significance of the 17060XXXX number?
I presume that the vehicle has a 5710xxxx chassis number. |

The vehicle is a 1956 model year (model years ran with the factories summer shut down) and hence has a 17060XXXX chassis number. The axles, gearbox and engine are also stamped with 17060XXXX numbers which makes it a matching numbers vehicle. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Looks like it could be made into a nice useable Series 1 rather than a something you dare not use for fear of getting it scratched.

That is truely beautiful, I hope you don't regret selling it. The price seems very reasonable when you see what some not nearly as original go for.
Good luck with the sale! I wish I was in a position to make you an offer, someone is going to be very lucky! I just hope it goes to a true enthuast and not someone looking to make a quick buck. Ah, thanks, I had forgotten that the chassis number format changed for the 1956 model year and no longer had a leading digit indicating the model year (my Series Ones are all '55 or earlier). Makes perfect sense now.
If I'd spent a few minutes checking I could have avoided asking a dumb question! It looks to be a very nice unmolested honest vehicle, and a good price, and someone will be very happy. Good luck with the sale. |

I'm embarrassed for you Blackwolf! I've never, ever asked a dumb question myself. Did rebuild a 1706 from scratch during my first divorce though. This one for sale, built Sept '55 is an early '56 model and will be a lot of fun for somebody. |

Shroppy,
Is this still available? I have a friend who's very interested in this. I don't know if he'd be able to see it sooner but I'm going to be up in Shropshire at the end of the month regardless. Ed Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Hi all,
Thank you for your kind comments. Don't worry blackwolf, I think Rover made the numbers as complicated they possibly could! The transition from 571 to 170 isn't even clear in the workshop manual.... I'll definitely regret selling it. But, I think I'd regret keeping it and not using it even more. I've a 51' 80" that I'm going to restore in my grandfathers memory. He had fond memories of the 'ones with the sloping back edge of the door' from his time in national service but sadly never got the chance to own one. As far as pricing goes, there certainly seem to be a lot advertised for extortionate amounts. But, I'd like it to go to an enthusiast who'll use it for its intended purpose hence the 'sensible' pricing. I'll put the money from the sale towards the purchase of some land so that I can finally move out...... So, as one door closes another opens... or something like that? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |
