Morning all, the inevitable has happened and the Defender has failed its MOT. I have taken it off the road while I decide what to do with it, and would appreciate the collective wisdom of the forum to help me......
I have been quoted £1200 to do the work required, most of which is labour. There is some welding needed, together with a universal joint and a new rear shock. There is another c.£500 of welding work to head off some other potential issues (but not required for the MOT), and the annual service is due. All this leaves me with a bill of some £1800. I have appended this message to the 'for sale' advert that I posted a few months ago, as my current thinking is if I get a reasonable offer (i.e. not taking the p*ss) from someone who can do this work themselves then I'll probably sell it. Offset against this is the fact that I like it, I enjoy offroading in it when the opportunity arises, values are going up, will I regret it, etc, etc. Any reasonable offers/advice welcome and will be considered. Thanks. |

Anybody buying your Land Rover would be taking a gamble given the work that needs doing, and sadly for you, the price would need to reflect that.
Whenever I take mine in for any kind of repair, fault finding or MOT I always make sure I take it to a garage that understands Land Rovers. Depending on how much the Land Rover owes you, I would be tempted to get the work done and then either sell with 12 months not for a fair price, Or continue enjoying it. Thanks Bows. One of the lads who looks after mine has plenty of experience with Land Rovers so covered there. I’ll see if any offers come in and that might well make the decision for me!

If it was mine I would fix it and keep it, but I’m hands on and could do all of it myself (Engineer)
I have been in a similar position when things like this happen, I think “oh no, not again” but I dig in get the job done, within a week I’ve forgotten all the hassle and enjoy driving it again. I’ve been tempted to get rid and buy a Jap double cab pick up but when I’m sitting alongside one at the lights I thank god I didn’t, there’s nothing like a defender and I’m always getting admiring looks from other drivers (the car, not me 😏) I just couldn’t imagine driving anything else, I just think by the way you are talking you might regret it in the long run. Optimists say the glass is half full.. Pessimists say the glass is half empty.. Engineers say the glass is twice the size it needs to be! |

Probably keep it if it was mine.
You know what's wrong and how much to correct so ok it may cost £1800 but sell it for 6/7k and you then have to find another which may also have issues!! |

Some significant issues there. Suggests bulkhead is on way out for brake mounting. Chassis work would indicate it's a bit of an ongoing one and a worry each year at mot time. I would be tempted to replace chassis and repair bulkhead. It wouldn't be significantly more than 1.8k quoted to do with new chassis. I would then keep it Cheers

‘Good overall condition’!
10p engine 180k miles. Looks like it needs a new chassis, maybe bulkhead too. Plus the rest of the failings... I’d perhaps look at your asking price if you want shut of it. |
