Wiper System & Dealer
On our way back home, after recent holiday in France, had reason to use Wipers for a long period of time ( typical UK summer) Laughing . Anyway, the wipers developed a clunk-click every time they changed direction. However they cleaned well and parked correctly, just this noise that seemed to get louder as time went by.
As any problem was under warranty decided to visit dealer - Stratstone Landrover in Cardiff - Foreman and Service Manager from Service Dept came out to vehicle - listened and looked ( I was expecting the usual " It's a Defender Sir, they all do that " ) but instead I got " I'll get the drive cable and 2 spindle boxes ordered - should be here by Tuesday and we'll give you a call to arrange a date, Sir. The Drive motor sounds fine." RESULT. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

I am on my third set of spindle boxes etc now.

Wipers work fine when the noise starts, it is the clunking sound that gets annoying after a while.

Too True. Rolling with laughter

Must be a regular problem because the Dealer agreed so readily to replace them. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

I needed to replace the park switch on my '07 DC's wiper motor, and whilst I had the motor out took the opportunity to lubricate the wheelbox on the motor, the cable, and the spindles properly. There was next to no lubricant on them to begin with, and what was there had become a revolting solid consistency with no lubricating properties.

Afterwards the wipers were virtually silent in operation as well as faster. They also now park consistently in the same position, whereas before they would stop anywhere in the bottom two inches of their travel (when they stopped at all, that was - the fault with thepark switch meant that they would intermittently keep going when switched off).

It is a bit of a hassle to get the motor and cable off, but well worth the result. You don't have to remove the whole dash, however.

On the spindle boxes as well, you can "push" in the tab thing and tighten them up (reduce the backlash)

this helps stop a lot of the clunking.
