Took the defender to the main dealers for some warranty works, given a Disco 5 auto as a loan car for the week done 100 miles in it today and I’m already bored with it

Built the carport maybe two years ago and never got round to lighting it, mostly because I have an inbuilt hatred of PIRs for lighting control (I think they are better than they used to be when I was on the tools) and couldn’t think of any other way of switching the lights. I have experimented here with a wireless, battery less, non blue tooth switching system that allows me to have a fob in the Truck and switch the lights on without getting out (or jumping up and down waving my arms - that’s what you get with PIRs). It works really well and considering how bad the LR reversing light is, and how tight the fit is between the two sheds, this is a real result and not extortionately expensive. |

If anyone is interested, the shed behind (in the photo) was a transportable chicken shed and now my store and workshop. Its 12ft x 24ft and once broke down into 6x6 sections (the roof sections are 6x4ft) Purchased by my Great Grandfather in the 1930's. It was second hand to him and I helped move it to its location in the photo 35 years ago. It is pickled in creosote and I think this is perhaps its final resting place. This is mainly because I have lined the inside in plywood and insulated the walls making it 'challenging' now to move. Anyone fancy their B&Q shed lasting 90+ years?? |

Assuming you can drive into your car port either way perhaps a hinged timber bulk to match your upright posts would coral your defender in to help prevent theft

No absolutely not. Seen a couple of installations on YouTube and heard of a few more on other forums and they seem to be mostly positive.
Would appreciate your comments on them? I've a couple of areas around the property where they look like they would be ideal. I just need to pull the trigger. |

Well, early days yet, Supacat.
I plumped for a two channel receiver. One channel to switch the front shed light, one to do the car port. I have two, two gang IP67 switches and a Fob Switch which I keep in the truck. Each channel can have upto ten switches associated to it. A supply (Live & Neutral) is taken to the receiver and there are two output terminals for the two switch wires. The unit has a tiny wire aerial. In reality, I took a 5 Core flex to this unit and connected all of my cables within an adaptable box with fixed terminals. More space an a lot easier. The lights are just wired back to this enclosure and I have the neutrals and earths terminated here as well. Programming was simple. I have also seen the videos, the online instructions are good, and the printed instructions, although small, are very clear and concise. I have also never had any issues with TLC (and when there was a hiccup, they phoned me within 30 minutes of placing the order). The switches are the same size, height and width as a standard one/two gang plate switch put a lot thinner. They all are packaged with double sided 3M tape, but I opted for good old screws for fixing. The switches feel well made and the switch actuation (the movement in the switching it) is surprisingly small - maybe two or three mm. The little fob has been put on a keyring and sits in the Mud tray in the top of my cubby box. The range seems good. My receiver is mounted within a plastic enclosure in the wooden shed adjacent to the car port. I have switched the lights on from inside the Truck at about 18m without issue (they advertise 30m within a building). Overall, I have been quietly impressed. As an old time electrician, wireless switching seems a bit 'Harry Potter wizardry' but I have to say, if the system lasts, it could be a real bonus for getting switches to hard to reach areas. It would be great in stairwells. |
