Can I use a Discovery Gearbox in my Defender?
Hi,

I've got a feeling that the gearbox on my daily needs a rebuild. It's a 2003 TD5 110CSW.

Don't have time to wait whilst it's sorted, so considering grabbing an R380 out of a Disco as they seem plentiful and cheap. Then I've got time to get the box 'fixed'.

I know the transfer box ratios are different between Disco & Defender and I presume there's a certain amount of ancillary swapping required, but are the internals and ratios the same?

TIA

S

I think the input shaft has a differnt length so it will probably a lot off work to get that in. But somebody with more knowledge will tell you exact. Roel

You have to strip the box the change the selector shafts as they are different between Defender and Discovery’s.

You dont have to strip the box. Ashcroft make a selector adaptor that allows fitment of the defender shifter to the discovery box. Used one in my V8 to fit a defender LT77 selector housing to a discovery R380.

Why not just give your vehicle to Ashcroft for the day and have them fit a an exchange recon unit.
It's a lot less trouble than faffing around with disco boxes.
