I did not understand why the coolant level go 2-3 cm (1 inch aprox) under the MAX sign (half bowl) every time I "correct" it(no signs of leakage).
Also I feel that other people have the same problem, including TD5 .... I thought it was a cap problem. I changed cap 4 or 5 times. 4 months ago, working on my "monster" (the Mi.G not my Defender) noted that the cap of the expansion tank IVECO might be fine. Control excess pressure from 1.0 to 1.2 bar, perfect !!!! Restore the correct level at half bowl, I installed it and use the Defender during these four months to see what happen ........... ................ The coolant level has not dropped!!!! I'm not sure I see the issue - if the natural level is below the mark and remains constant?
If you fill to immediately below the overflow drain then it's bound to expand and loose some coolant, settling down when cold to a lower level. |

I have the same issue on my 2.2 puma ( 66000km now but the issue become at 42000km ). Land rover keep mine for 2 weeks along and never find an issue but level stay nearly 1 inch under the max lever to.
I really want know why. If it's better with IVECO parts I mount it. Tanks for the idea. |

Rather it's the opposite. If I rectify at the correct cold level, when the engine is warm the pressure dilates the rubber pipes (more than the thermal expansion of the liquid) and the level drops. But when cold the coolant should return to the correct height. This happens with the IVECO cap but not with that land rover one. Have the same with mine ... But, I do not see mark of coolant along the bottle so not sure it will change something ... But thanks for the idea I will try Phil current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today. Hi gents
I bought the cap because I had the same experience with lower liquid level. Infact opposite to the original cap that does not let the air in or out. This Iveco cap, I can see that this cap does not compress the air inside the expansion tank like the original , the iveco cap has 2 way ventilation , is that the aim to be breathing in two way ? What size hose is needed for the drain off?
Also, typing in the part number to Google, there are many replica items. Has anyone brought a non genuine cap? |

Given the problem that it's solving and the cost involved, I can't really see the point in risking a copy, to be honest.
