Thanks Steve - not one for me then - will get to a specialist - any view on whether I should limp it there?
or will that cause more damage?

It does indeed sound like a wheel bearing but if I were you I’d jack up the corner that you think is the culprit and try rotating and rocking that wheel .
There are other possibilities but I’d have thought you’d be hearing some heavy clunking and crunching if it were a cv , halfshaft or diff ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Something has come.e out of balance that rotates with road speed.

Wheel weights, prop weights?

Complete Failure of Shaft,cv, diff would need diff lock to drive. None of these or wheel bearings cause vibration in my experience. Cheers

When I had this once, it was not long after fording a stream in low level flood.
It likekh had water get into a UJ bearing cup, which I think the roller bearings disintegrated as were aged also and probably lacking grease.

It had the same symptoms as you had, then improved but not for long and got worse over a few months.
You couldn't tell the UJ cup had killed its self unless the prop was off.
MOT testing missed it, servicing checks missed it.
It caused a rear diff pinion oil leak many times and it wasn noticed and was only when it got really bad and I took the props off and articulated the joints was it found.
After I replaced them all. (What a job!) everything has been excellent and no more recurring diff pinion oil leak either.
The virbration was more severe at lower speeds, but was there at higher speeds too.

I could be barking up the wrong tree as it maybe something else but it's possible. No Guts, No Glory.

Could be a crownwheel breaking up.
