I think what is happening is that the marketing is focusing on the type of person who may buy the new defender and deliver them a concept lifestyle vehicle.
So its not for the typical user of this forum who tends to appreciate the traditional ruggedness of the old defender.
However, some of the mods that are around for the old defender are also lifestyle mods which some people feel they must have to improve the experience of the ownership of the old defender, which includes the off road handling, mods that help overcome most environments, mods that improve the look.
So...isn't what they are marketing with the new defender the same as what we have been exposed to with the old defender apart from the fact that they are targeting the lifestyle??
People will be sold on some of the options and what probably grates is the fact that LR has already got ahead of the game by developing the mods that are dealer fitted rather than something that we add ourselves pottering around at weekends.

Anyhoo, the more I see of the vehicle itself, forgetting the plastic add on and very likely to break side steps, the more I like the shape of it. I liked the shape of D3 and D4 we had, just the electrics and mechanicals let them down. Is the new Defender much lighter than a D4?

My partners 2l D5 is a lot lighter than her 3ltr D4 was .. so probably the new standard Defender will probably be lighter than the D4 as the building techniques and materials are more modern ... Jeez £78,000 for a caravan that only sleeps 2, you could buy a nice Defender (Classic or New) for that! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

According to the e-brochure the unladen weight of a basic 90 will be 2.2t and a full spec 110 will be 2.4t

When I was looking at a D5 last year every dealer I spoke to told me that the D240 would be a disappointing drive after a 3.0ltr RRS. From standstill, slow to accelerate but once up to speed it was fine so a heavier New Defender’s performance won’t be much better I would imagine. The negativity from the salesmen put me off asking for a test drive. Like the new Defender Tim, it is beyond my pay grade

Still think it would look kind of cool hung on the tow hitch.

Not sure if I spent £78000 on a caravan, I would be doing anything too extreme with it?

I had a similar experience. My dad used to have a 3l.0 tdv6 D4 and now has a 3ltr RRS. When he got different LR Service cars they mostly gave him the 2.0 td4 ingenium diesels and I couldn´t believe how big the real world difference was. I´m really hoping the new defender will get the 3.0 diesel soon. Stunning engine.
