There is definitely something reassuring about a throttle cable and proper mechanical brakes 😂

Some more detailed technical information from this Oz article: https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2020-land...ts-figures

A few salient ones:

14 - Defender's electrics gets IP67 electrical rating
The electronics and connections in the new Defender have been designed to meet the IP67 water immersion standards. That means they can be submerged in one metre of fresh water for an hour without intrusion or damage.

31 - Bullbar
Land Rover has developed a ’roo bar specifically for Australia. To be made of steel, the bar will be offered as an accessory, keeping intact all sensors and safety systems. The ’roo bar will be revealed closer to the car’s June 2020 on-sale date.

34 - Crawl time
The Defender has an impressively low crawl ratio of 51.5:1 for diesel versions and 57.2:1 for the six-cylinder petrol.

45 - Stopping power
There is no mechanical link between the brake pedal and the brake discs. Instead the Defender gets a brake-by-wire system claimed to provide more “precise, linear brake pressures”. Engineers also say the electronic braking system helps with off-road traction due to the ability to better regulate braking to each individual wheel.

Seriously? I'm shocked this kind of setup is even legal. So lose electricity and bye bye brakes? I'd rather have an NCAP of 1 star and no airbags than something like that.

I don't understand that either. How do you supply the brake with the engine off or no battery.

I could understand if they said that the servo assist was fully by wire, but I don't understand the zero mechanical link. -------------------------------

The world's most modern plane, the F35, keeps having system start-up failures. Pilots can't get it started and have to go through its version of Ctl-Alt-Del. Must be very confidence-inspiring for the pilots.... Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

Re IP67. I agree it will prove to be insufficient for the electronics on the bottom of the vehicle. The west coast of Scotland and those driving through 900 mm of water will manage to generate hydraulic pressures that overcome the seals. I don’t expect those magic see through car cameras to last very long. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

The side panel is optional. I was on the IAA LR Workshop yesterday and got a deep sight of that new very capapable, very tough Defender. It may polarize the fans but i personaly think it is GREAT!

To all who say: "This is not a Defender anymore". Compare it with loads of other cars Golf1 to Golf7 or Land Cruisers of the past 30 years and be aware that the step from the old to the new Defender was jus a single very large step instead of 7 or more steps.

It would be interesting to run some penetration tests on the new one. With 85 ECUs, live software updates, WiFi, and presumably all CANbus comms, I really hope they've addressed cyber security adequately. I can foresee ransomware attacks galore if the electronic security is up to the usual JLR sta cards.

In asking that question, I'm guessing you already have a good idea what the answer is. Have JLR addressed the keyless entry issues fully yet?

The SOTA worries me. I can forsee an owner returning to a vehicle after having parked it up, and it not starting due to a failed "update", or even worse having changed some driving characteristic to something unfamiliar or even subjectively worse.

It's bad enough if another driver changes the seat and mirror positions, imagine jumping in the car with different throttle, gear change or suspension settings?

And then there's the issue of me having to buy my car a SIM with a data package just so JLR can interrogate it to gleam information to improve their revenue stream. Parasitic software.

I am also generally uneasy about the way in which the new Defender, along with all other similar new vehicles, is fully capable of sending comprehensive telemetry data to just about anyone all the time. Although I have nothing to hide, I really don't want every detail of every journey logged. I distrust the way that manufacturers are so reluctant to let customers know the extent of the data harvesting they they can, and possibly do, do, but it certainly goes (or can go) down to things like the number (and mass) of people in the vehicle, and whether they're wearing seat belts, as well as the more expected speeds etc.

In the fullness of time it will inevitably lead to road pricing and so on, but a little more transparency would be welcome.

The French motorway toll station could put the price up as you approach, not heard this brexit scare yet surprislingly
