For technical info speak to David at Ashcroft, he will be your font of all knowledge.
Can't comment on the TDCi but I bought an Ashcroft auto conversion for my 300TDi and it transformed the vehicle. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Thank you for heads up. I was wondering if anyone on here had one or had driven one. Cheers

two write-ups
https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/i...feb_09.pdf https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/i...g08LRO.pdf I've got an old hydraulic ashcroft auto conversion in my TD5. Sometimes I like it other times I don't. But the bits I don't like would be fixed with the later electronic ZF. |

Same as TVR Tommy, I had mine converted with the older hydraulic box and most of the time I love it and would not go back to a manual and I am sure the electronic version with cure the occasional times it annoys me. Overall it is a great conversion, superb off road and most of the time on road too.

If I remember correctly, there was a company with a more modern auto box, at price...
I considered one so my wife could drive it a bit easier. |

my boss has TDCI on ashcroft electroshift
Acceleration is smooth, but traction is pretty bad for a 4x4, really doesn't like towing, difficult terrain or anything you might expect from a working defender... I have driven a JE Puma conversion. Autos aren't really my thing but I thought it was decent.

That is an expensive route to negate the shaft issues? Are you having shaft issues? Thought you'd changed to an aftermarket solution? 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

I’d love an auto conversion but I was never impressed with the 4 speed ZF box on my D2 (always thought it needed another gear - plus had a lot of problems (2 boxes in 150,000 miles)). Think it would be even worse with Puma engine.
The Ford 6 speed box from JE looks good, but ‘from’ £12K inc VAT is crazily expensive - I personally can’t justify the cost. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey 2003 D2 Td5 Black [SOLD] |

I've driven both the ZF 4 Speed from Ashcroft with the compushift and the 6 speed from JE. I would pick the 4 speed all day long compared to the 6 speed.
The last 4 speed I drove had a BAS map on it and was very good on a 2.4 TDCI. Yes its a 4 speed but the torque meant it drove lovely (well, as well as an converted transit engine'd vehicle would drive!). It returned less MPG than standard especially at motorway speeds but if you must have an auto - this would be the way I would go. Better if remapped as it does seem to zap a bit of power with the auto The 6 speed seemed way less smooth and you can catch it out easily, offroad it didn't know which gear it needed to be in and wasn't as simple as the 4 speed - I do not think its worth the extra money. |

Sorry, just to quantify, I built and ran two vehicles with hp22/24 amalgamated boxes, one with 4.6tc the other with 4.0tc. Am aware of the older style boxes, these were on Tgvs. Have also spent many an hour in a 200bhp+ td5 trophy vehicle, so know how box copes with 40s and in that guise. was after the info on the electronic boxes in a tdci.
The 6 speed is mega £££ as pointed out. Lr Sam Was it the Ashcroft demo you drove? Osloblue I dont follow the traction point you raised. I dont see how the auto makes traction problematic. My experience auto is a major advantage off road. Towing I get, depending on how you have set change points.
