It's the target market.
Once you've figured that out it makes a lot of sense.
To me, most of them are people who wouldn't otherwise buy a Land Rover group product.

That maybe true but I feel they are really selling out by making the first 2WD Land Rover in history.

To survive they need to make £££.
Tata will no doubt want a return on the investment.
Bigger profits come from branching out into a bigger marketplace with a new type of product.

Look at that pig ugly Cayenne. Worldwide Porsche have earned an absolute fortune out of that. Yes, they upset a lot of Porsche traditionalists. But they've made £££ out of it and that's all shareholders care about really.

Does it really matter. They will be able to get the Freelander into the Fleet Market with the 2WD = £££££. They have to make money and capture all available markets. 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

There were one or two batches of 2WD Series made especially for the RAF Wink Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

[Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc]

Well I must say I don't like the Evoque. It looks too poncy and I think in time it will be regarded as LRs motor for well off hairdressers.

But the bottom line is LR is a business. It exists to make money for shareholders. In troubled economic times who would have thought that a car company that makes mostly high end, high maintenance product would be so astonishingly sucessful. It knows its market and is going to sell tons of them. With Tata's bottomless pit of investment and LRs engineering prowess this is a real sucess story, particularly when 1000s of new jobs are being created as well. I just hope Mr Cameron feels ashamed of himself when claiming (as he will) some of the success of LR and other British companies as being down to the environment he has created while slamming the door on Bombardier - where it would have been so easy to support home grown industry with a stroke of a pen

It looks as though its going to be hard to get hold of for at least the first year, selling out the entire planned production for showrooms this year

I cant really see it matters if its 2WD.

They may as well make about 80% of there vehicles 2WD as most dont go offroad.

As long as the Defender stays 4WD, then i cant see a problem. Current:D4 HSE
Gone: BMW Z4MC
Gone: Defender TD5 90 CSW
Previous: Discovery TD5 ES (Gone)

I thought all volume car manufacturers had been forced to sign-up to some agreement on an average CO2 output across their range?
(Not a problem for Ford, Citroen etc., who make cars at both ends of the spectrum).

So hence 2WD freelanders and evoques from LR, and the re-badged Toyota IQs from Aston Martin etc.?
This then means specialist sports/4x4 manufacturers can continue to produce high CO2 'performance' vehicles alongside the 'greener' alternatives.

Therefore so far as I see it, the fact the 50mpg 2WD evoque exists is excellent news!
And it does look very smart too - if I lived an urban existance I might have been tempted!

That's wrong.
You can order one from Lookers in London and provided you want a diesel get it this year as I write this...
So get your orders in quick! Mr. Green

All helps to fuel the buy, buy, buy frenzy of the trendy types that want the latest thing though. Thumbs Up

Top Gear was the first time I have seen one with a human to give it scale,

I think it looks good and its performance off road was very good,

They should bring out a special overland beefed up version much like Toyota did with the FJ cruiser
lights and racks and stuff, this would broaden its appeal............but maybe that is where the new Defender
will be !

The merc cl, what value !!!!

Drove a Merc CL55 AMG yesterday offered in PX. Its the V8 Supercharged version with 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. What a car shame the glove-box was broken!

Apparently CL got the new features even before the S Class....
