Hoping to try some wild camping on an upcoming trip, but the one issue that always plays on my mind is that of the inevitable need to answer call of nature. Anyway, all the advice I need landed in my inbox today. Will I find a branch strong enough to try the “cliffhanger”?

How can I put this....? I've wild camped a lot and addressed this problem regularly. I was surprised that my own 'technique' wasn't mentioned..... but not going to go into detail in a public forum! Ooh.... too much "build up" .... it'll be an anti-climax now....
Basically it's a variation between the cliff-hanger and tree hugger. Remove your belt - because you're not using it at that particular time. Wrap belt around a sturdy branch, or small tree, grab a firm hold of the belt and lean back. The key challenges are not peeing into your shoes, and making sure your 'deposit' lands accurately in the hole you've dug.... I'm not sure how I'd manage in the desert.... That Aussie article is good 'clean' fun, but it's also funny how unprepared folk are for this. Doing Duke of Ed expedition stuff with scouts, there will be squeals of horror at the very idea. We've become too used to Thomas Crapper's finest porcelain. I'd rather do it outdoors then use some of the bathrooms I have seen in some places.

I know what you mean. Our office bogs can be an eye opener!
As for all these suggested techniques, I'm going to have get down the gym and start working on my squats and core strength. How am I supposed to peruse the latest issue of LRO whilst the veins are popping out of my forehead trying not to collapse into my own wake! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Back to the matter in hand (although if literal you've got some other issues to deal with) as a Scout leader I've got to agree with donmacn. A favourite trick from when I was in the Army and on an exercise was to identify a suitable 'drop zone' then hide a shovel on a piece of string in the leaves. On discovering someone was going to 'go', someone would be ready to pull the string and remove the shovel. We were a signals unit so always had generators running, and so noise was never an issue. You would be surprised how much distress can be caused after someone has had a dump, then looked down to find it has vanished!! Panic sets in! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Just got back from my big trip. Did only two separate nights wild camping and the call of nature never came. Nerves? What I did notice was the shocking state one site had been left by previous campers. Bog roll popping out of the sand all over the place. Minging. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

My observation at "wild dumping" when working on farms over the years has been to pay attention to making sure all your clothing is out of the way when performing said action. Nothing is more cringeworthy than when your mate comes back after an expedition looking very uncomfortable. Twice in a week he hadn't checked to make sure his boiler suit had been pulled forward when he dropped it and without checking had gone and slipped back into the said boiler suit along with a new friend which was now sat between his shoulder blades.
Not very conducive to a pleasant morning sandwich break with him sat there! |
