Didn't Gerry McGovern win a design award? He needs to give it back. Any why didn't someone at Land Rover say... "No Gerry, you've just drawn ANOTHER Range Rover, what we want is a new DEFENDER Gerry." Very blobby. And very London taxi. It will probably sell like hotcakes! |

For me i can see it with a snorkel, rack, sliders and tube or bullbar/winch looking very good. All of which have been seen in spy shots so its not dreaming. I think the SWB will be interesting considering the lego model, i think LR will have some tricks up their sleeves |

Click image to enlarge I think the engineering team and the design team have probable done the best possible job considering all the environmental, safety, sales, capability, keeping as much defender heritage as possible. But we have not seen it revealed yet so time will tell. Autocars render is the best i've seen of the side, add that with the rear of goodwood and we have a winner imo. |

Just registered on the forum. Never have owned a LR product. Didn’t know that auto maker existed til I was 13 or so when I saw a green 90’s Discovery that was just so cool and different then other SUVs. when I saw a 90 for the first time near 20 years ago, I’ve always thought it would be so damn fun to kit one out and make the ultimate sportsmen’s, adventure , work , ..... toy. I told my self , “I’m gonna get me one of them one day.” And boy when I saw they made a crew cab pickup..... dream car. Thus far Pursuing a project like that hasn’t made sense. Maybe something to do down the road when I have time for building it and enjoying it.
Forget how I came across news of the new defender. Hell probably stumbled onto it while looking at pics of 130s daydreaming about how I’d make mine. I’d say I’ve been checking in on it’s progress at least every couple of months for at least 3-4 years so I’ve been watching it all unfold with much anticipation. I was and am interested in it for what it is and how it could be a very practical vehicle for me needs. I will say I get a lot of people’s opinion that this thing isn’t a defender. I would personally echo the comments of others that this was a missed opportunity. They should have made this the new discovery and then gwagened the old defender, but oh well. Doesn’t bother me much and this vehicle as it is, seems to be something I’d consider for my practical needs. currently I am in the market for a larger family vehicle in the next 2 years. 3 max. Nothing on the market excites me. Hyundai palisade.......good try but nah. Toyota Highlander good practical choice..... the new design is even more min van like. Nope. VW Atlas Not bad but I’d wait til they do some upgrades to that plastics interior design. So I’m interested to see if this new defender can do the things those cars do but actually do it with for lack of a better word. Style. Liking the look accept the very front end. I think it could have been made a little more rugged looking carrying the defender nameplate, but not a deal breaker. I’m guessing over all the new Defender will meet that expectation, but there are other areas I worry about for a practical new vehicle choice. Reliability? We’ll see. I’m hopeful this marks a change for LR. To be monitored and that’s a big reason I signed up on here. Price. Of course I hope it’s 25 grand but realistically I just hope a well appointed version could be had for 60. Anyway. My eyes are peeled. Lol. Originally I just wanted to comment about how bad they missed on the front end. |

If it looked like that drawing, everyone would be happy. But it doesn't! Roofline on the red one looks great. Roofline on the real one looks to be all wrong. |

I don't want to be negative, because the finished product will probably be... not too bad. But to counter your assertions that the above checklist adds up to a Defender, I owned a 1995 110 300tdi. It had no bulging flares. It had no checkerplate. It had no bonnet bulge. That takes care of the first three. Then... It had a winch (and so do most serious 4x4s) It had a hipline (no comment on this one till better photos come out) It had flat windows and windcreen. Bet this doesn't have a flat windscreen. It had a sloped roof (the new one seems to have a curved roof) This will be a great alternative to a Prado, Pajero or 200 Series Cruiser. But surely even the rose coloured glasses have to take a break eventually and you see the missed opportunity here. LR NEED this to work. They are losing money hand over fist. This will not be like the 3rd Gen Range Rover in 2002 which was just sensational. They missed here. |

We do need a replacement for the Yeti, however, so all is not lost!
If that is the first leaked photo of the real deal, and it certainly seems plausible, then what is the purpose of the "chequer plate effect" on the side edges of the bonnet? |

Very narrow bonnet, not designed for easy access. Hope the wings are easy to change as they are huge, can see a few being damaged on any working vehicles.

As I and others said at a very early stage when the 1st spy shots were seen, in many ways it's a great replacement for D3/D4 and what the D5 should have been.
I'll reserve judgement until the "130" appears in the flesh, but I think load space is going to be tight on the 90/110 variants. I'm sure it will be very competent on and off the road with all the electronics, but as far as I'm concerned Defender evolution ended with the 2.4/2.2 Puma generation. This new beast has lost the blood line and iconic looks of the original. If you lined up a selection of Landies, from the earliest 80" series 1, right through to the last of the 130 Defenders, anyone would immediately recognise the progression. Put the new Defender at the end of the line and most would ask what it was doing in the identity parade. This may not be important to some buyers, but for me a big part of the Defender's appeal was the timeless design and instant association with the brand. To call the latest vehicle a Defender and to use the 90/110/130 designations smacks of exploitation of the past. JLR should have been grown up enough to call it something else and make it clear that they are no longer interested in playing in the previous market sector. RIP Defender. You had a great innings. Interesting though that Suzuki (Jimny), Jeep (Wrangler) and Mercedes (G-Series) have solidly retained their iconic designs whilst moving forward with the times. With so many choices in the JLR line up that now all appear very similar to me, it is strange that they would want to roll out another version that is so nondescript. If it was their only offering I could get it, but it isn't. I guess the marketing and money men within JLR must have concluded the market wasn't big enough for a retro styled vehicle. Time will tell what volumes they shift and if they get a return from the investment made. For anyone who is thinking of buying one, I would wait a while, as I suspect there could be some heavy discounting once the initial launch excitement dies down and supply starts to exceed demand. |
