Well is that ironic or what ?
The Defender on a flat bed truck , And a Toyota Landcriuser doing the heavy lifting and under its own steam ! How did Toyota build its reputation as the best 4x4xfar ? Well as Mr Deeks has said , we are aware of our reputation @ Land Rover , We will add complexity to get durability , ( not Toyota reliability ) . Some what of a contradiction really , Like Military intelligence !!! There story could well end if they do not start selling vehicles that are reliable and easily repaired . Do not get me started on not already having pick up variants , These are the vehicles that develop brand credibility , as we reach peak suv !! |

This is probably the dumbest post I have seen yet.
Also you do realise that Land Rover and Toyota are pretty much on par in terms of reliability according to JD power UK. The UK JD power is more realistic survey as more four by four Toyota models are available compared to the states in a similar way that more are available in Australia. You can't drive any car that has a full stitched car cover over all of the windows and the windscreen and rear window. In reality a Range Rover Vogue would be a better camera car due to having self leveling suspension just like Top Gear use. Being in Kazakhstan I don't think they would be spoilt for choice

Love my Land Rovers , I have seven , but the truth is ,
If you are going in to the bush , desert anywhere around the globe , Toyota is the go too vehicle manufacturer , Once it was Land Rover , but now they make fast depreciating expensive to purchase and own , Suv,s ! Even in Kazakhstan they know this , Like Australia , South Africa etc . The new complex Defender will only reinforce this reputation ! |

Actually in Australia toyota has quite a bad reputation at the moment, you seem to buy into thier marketing.

A LandCruiser for example is only available in petrol V8 and Auto in the states, the HiLux and the Prado are not even available. In the UK there is petrol and diesel and auto and manual available. |

If the level of durability by design and testing that is going into this vehicle results in something that doesn't need bushes/suspension arms etc to be replaced at 60k miles then this will be a step forward. The aluminium monocoque can only help. With some improved durability of the drivetrain (which I guess is D5) and reliability of the electronics it could be a winner.
Every new vehicle is complex these days and making comparisons with (say) an old 200Tdi or an J70 Land Cruiser is tenuous. If you really want to go off the map, then take one of these. And some spares. The earlier comments about LRE courses not being challenging enough should not be a surprise; they have been carefully manipulated to allow vehicles to breeze though what appear to be impossible terrain and impress potential customers. More of a marketing tool than the development tool that they used to be. I'm really warming to the new Defender. I have a feeling that Land Rover have done a good job and I'm looking forward to seeing it. |

Well not long to wait for the big reveal I guess ,
What I do know though , and this has not been discussed here , is the aluminum architecture of Range Rover/Jaguars is a nightmare to repair after any sort of impact . Local panelbeaters here will not touch a JLR product and they are written off by insurance companies due to there complex to repair structures , summing up , very specialised to repair and often uneconomic to pursue . I have seen late model Range Rovers going through the damaged auctions with little visual damage but have been told by people in the trade to steer clear . And this Defender is on the same structure as the hideous to look at Disco 5 and hideously over priced Disco 5 that is a sales flop . So the new Defender should pick up sales from the Disliked Disco set but I WOULD NOT want to damage it in a hurry . Premium Durability = complexity ??? |

It gets worse... 
I notice that it has one of those horrible swan-necked towballs. No NATO pintle on the new Pretender then. I get that it is going to be the best thing since sliced bread if you're an SUV person and want a Discovery with a mild shot of steroids, but if you want a working vehicle you can probably forget it. Buy a few spare real Defenders when the SUV brigade unloads them. |
