Series 1 LR name.... just wondering....
All the years I've been into LR's (got my first one when I was 15.... I'm now 46)

But never really thought about this until now, and I don't know the answer....

the series 1..... when it was introduced/released... was it called a "series 1" or just a Land Rover?

Did it become a S1 when the S2 was released? or was it called the S1 from day-1 with the presumption that a S2 would be on the horizon?

Thumbs Up

As far as I can recall, it was just a Land Rover and was not seen as long term project.

It became the Series I when the Series II was introduced. In much the same way that it's become the 1948 Defender Rolling with laughter

ISTR that they also became the 'standard' and 'long' when the 107 was introduced, with the SWB/LWB shorthand again only really being coined in Series II days. Darren

A Bulletin was sent round to Dealers and Distributors, retrospectively re-naming the Land-Rover built from 1948 to 1958 as the Series One, when the SII was introduced.

No such thing happened when the Defender 90/110/130 replaced the Land Rover Ninety, One Ten and One Two Seven. which were never referred to as Defenders in any factory literature.

What publicity people do is another matter......

They were simply land-rovers. When the 107" was launched they became the "regular" and "long" land-rovers. This seems to have later shifted to long and short wheelbase. Only the series II onwards were named by series, series 1 was indeed retrospective. 2011 110 USW

And it was a Rover...
First distinction would have been when the 107" came in as well as the 80"
Hard to believe 80" was same length and width as the original Mini... Ex scottish & southern 110 Td5 van (shed) with PTO driven winch (L-R special vehicles)
Before that, Disco 1, Freelander 1, 26105382 80" with a 1600cc (not much slower)

I was born mid 20th C. A Land Rover throughout my life has always been, simply, a Land Rover.

The shape defines the name.

When the Range Rover was launched in the '70's it was not called a Land Rover.

So all these fancy names - Series whatever, 110 90, Ninety one ten, 130, Defender, USW, DCPU, County are meaningless, if it's the right shape (and available with multiple options e.g. PTO, Cherry Picker, Ambulance, Fire Engine LWB, SWB, etc. etc. etc.)
its a LAND ROVER.
