Have you had any previous issues with the MAF sensor? Have you had the EGR valve removed?

If you can hear blowing noises, I’d be suspecting a boost leak first. That could lead to MAF error too I believe. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I’m sorry to hear of your travails Sabot. I had what seemed to be a bad MAF sensor reading, which was also cleared, but it continued dropping into limp mode. It turned out to be a low coolant reservoir, and since topping up, no problems. Maybe (one of a bazillion things) worth looking at.
I’m assuming this is a non-LR or non-4x4 garage? Perhaps the usual big-three generic French brand garage? There is a LR dealer in Dijon http://nudantautomobiles-dijon.concession-landrover.fr/ And then these guys are about 50km away, but currently on hols until next Monday. Typical s*** French website. http://www.4x4lemercier.com/ Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Many thanks all for your swift responses.
I have not previously had any issues with the MAF sensor and the EGR has not been removed. I did think the EGR could be the culprit but would that cause a blowing noise? A boost leak sounds likely, or maybe split intercooler? When I first broke down I messaged Pete from BAS who did my remap through the chat function on his website (cannot recommend him enough, top guy, absolutely incredible service), he also mentioned hoses or intercooler and even sent me some pictures to see what to look out for. In hindsight I wish I had spent more time looking at the engine bay. I checked the hoses to see if any split/came loose but since I had 6 hours ahead of me (and was supposed to collect the wife and kids from Milan airport) I decided to take up the RAC on their offer of a hire car to continue the journey to Piedmont. I initially left the car with LR Dijon but was informed by the RAC yesterday that they moved the car to a place called garage RdG in Fénay as LR did not have time to look at the car... 4x4lemercier looks good but a shame they are closed until next week. I had hoped to have it fixed this week so i can collect it and continue our journey further South in Italy. I guess my best bet is to try to explain to the garage what the possible issues could be (EGR, boost leak, split intercooler, etc, ...) and hope they understand me/actually check! Or alternatively see if I can persuade the RAC to repatriate my car to the UK and enjoy the rest of my holiday with the rental Renault! |

As you heard a noise, more likely a split intercooler hose or even the intercooler itself has split.

I got the exact same fault code and checked everything, hoses, MAF etc. Turns out my intercooler split at the seems (140,000km) I replaced it with a BAS unit (much much much better).

The first action of any defect fault finding is to look at what has been messed with recently.
Probably 50% of technical fault are caused by recent maintenance or modification activity. If you have just had new hoses and a remap I would suggest your issue is related to that, also 2.2s are known for charge air split hoses. There is every likelihood as others have said that your issue is a leak on the boost air side, hose , cooler or a loose clip. Received a call from the RAC yesterday afternoon that the truck has been fixed. Did the 6 hour drive back to Dijon overnight and picking the Defender up this morning. Fingers crossed it is indeed fixed, RAC wasn't able to give much detail on what they did to it... Slightly nervous as have to pass through the Mt Blanc tunnel which is not an ideal place for another breakdown!

Made it through the Mont Blanc tunnel without issues. Car is running great, friendly mechanic in Dijon confirmed it was a loose hose (intercooler side). Had them replaced just before the trip - so as you said LR90XS2011, last maintenance item was the culprit!
Many thanks all for you help and advice! |
