Will a tdci lt230 fit a td5 ? I’m pretty sure it should!

I have one in mine, you’ll need the vibration damper and linkages off the TD5 👍

Remember also that the TDCi has the same gearing (1.2) as a Disco2, so higher than a Td5 Defender.

Not a big fan of "1.2" boxes in the older Defenders you lose the low end for towing horrible

Agree completely. IMHO fitting the 1:1.2 ratio box is both a great thing and a PITA all at the same time. Great for long cruises on the blacktop, pulling off with a trailer or laden 110 is painful and stressful on the clutch and transmission. Much better in a 90 though being lighter. Personal opinion of course and I will be fitting an overdrive for those long road trips. Best of both worlds... |

I was told they wouldn’t fit as the m82 output shaft is different? As you guys have already fitted the puma box they are wrong!

Yes, "they" are completely wrong. I use an old MT82 shaft to spin the gears when rebuilding any LT230, and for setting intermediate shaft bearing preload. I can assure you that they fit Td5 LT230s just fine.

I thought about a 1.2 transfer box for a while, and fitted the V8 5th gear in the end. Glad I did as I wouldn't fancy the amount of clutch needed to pull away with 3t of trailer behind and fully laden.

I fitted one to my first Td5 90 and regretted it, the remap helped improve pulling away. I agree that the way forward is the v8 5th gear or an overdrive.
(My friend is putting one In his and bought a tdci box) |

I've never had a problem pulling away with 3.5 tons behind my Td5 Disco2. |

^^^^ Probably due to smaller diameter tyres on the D2? (205's ish compared to 235 on a defender??)
I've got a 1.2:1 on my 110... i seems like every gear is "one higher"... so 1st is like 2nd, 2nd like 3rd etc. For heavy trailer pulling away, just slip into low range. With 255/85's its really bad at even hillstarts though (and it's chipped) |
