Rhino Winches
Has anyone got any thoughts on Rhino Winches which seem reasonably priced with good reviews on eBay

I'm specifically looking at the 12v 13500lb one.

Some get sold with a mounting plate (extra £40ish) is this required if I buy a winch bumper?

Regards

Rob

Hi Rob. If you have a winch bumper then the plate is not required.

Rhino winches are a good budget winch. I would definitely advise getting winch rope as opposed to wire cable if this is your first winch. Much easier to handle and use. 13500llb winch is well geared for a 110/130 a real slow and steady pull.

As with all budget (and not so budget) winches maintenance is key to the survival of your winch. They really should be stripped, cleaned and re-greased on a yearly basis, especially if left un-covered, heavily used or regularly dunked in rivers or bog holes.

The electrics are fairly easy and straightforward, especially if you get a winch with an Albright style contactor solenoid, the earlier tin can solenoids were prone to sticking open or closed with lack of use, something that the Albright setup does not do as regularly.

Providing you are not just wanting the winch for the way it looks I would above all recommend you get trained in how to use it, Lantra does an excellent intro course for this. Or your local 4x4 Response team might do as well.

Winches are a great and useful tool.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Geobloke...... I am now looking at the amazing range of winch bumpers... quite like the tubular ones with A frame..... but can see where the number plate might go.. I guess that is an issue with all winch arrangements.

Cheers

Rob

Absolutely, fitting the number plate is often the bit the needs a bit of head scratching. In the past I have had it on the roof rack of my Defender, but since fitting the Mantec bumper and soft A-bar it now resides above the fair lead.

There are some nice fairlead flip up number plate covers from the States that look good. I am thinking of swapping to one of those because the Mantec one offsets the plate between the A-Bar... Just looks too asymmetrical...

Sorry some of those photos are terrible but you get the idea.

Thanks Guy.

Yes I am surprised by the lack of input but maybe that realised you had it covered with your comprehensive posts.

Ive seen the blistering and it is a real pain...... but lets face it Land Rover can't stop the Defender corroding!!!

Yes I will put together a bag of accessories. OK on the cables. I will check out that supplier and I guess I need an isolation switch or just carry a spanner to connect t the battery when the winch is needed. Have you a recommended routing for the cables? I've not lookedd at all with that in mind as yet.

The defender is clean sometimes...not so clean at the moment!!! Miffy looks just fine, love the workshop...mine is a barn!!

We are getting married on 31st Aug, October has a few adventures planned. Butlins for a punk rock weekend LOL, Shell island for October Fest and maybe 4 nights camping and then 2-3 weeks doing there NC500 and Wind Camping with to occasional hotel for a de-louse! This is why I am being so careful with the money as we are paying everything for wedding and getting over 100 guest fed and well watered is damn expensive LOL. Ive also recently retired in October, although I have not enquired about the pensions yet....so I am in that interesting position of bank accounts shrinking rather than swelling and it is still playing with my head!

The Dixon bumper can be ordered for the 110 in a no-cut format.... I do like the look of a silver bash plate at the bottom so I might spray that bit body colour ( or slap so Ali paint on!)

I wasn't t aware of the soft shackles but they look good and I see that Rhino sell snatch blocks. Ok on Winch Blanket, have you seen these?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfeclan-Protect...amp;sr=8-7

Enough for now.....still haven't ordered anything.

You are in North Wales I believe yesterday we took a run out to Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfalls and then lunch at Lake e Vyrnwy while Sues car was being serviced in Oswestry.

Regards

Rob

I’m not sure if it helps but look at Winchmax too.
They do a nice kit, (obviously in my opinion, and I don’t like tube bumpers) which is 13500 winch, original looking bumper, cables, isolators, wireless remotes, synth cable, cover and it’s also available in black, rather than gastly orange.

I’ve got a Winchmax fitted to mine, different to the above one, and to an original LR bumper, and it’s been a great bit of kit.

Andy.

Thanks Andy, The Winch Max kooks identical to Rhino....... Funny though, I like the ghastly orange and am leaning towards tubular winch bumper...although I can make up my mind on that one!

How did you route your cables?

Regards

Rob

Just along the chassis leg to the battery box, and in via the existing hole and grommet used for the live. It’s very simple once you start.

Mine.

Maybe you should have a chat with both companies. That’s is what you will have to do if you have issues. It’s not something I did, but I spoke to Winchmax about their product before buying. You don’t want to end up with a product without support later if things go Pete Tong.

Just a thought.
