Help! Rat in Car
Whilst I realise this might be a cause of amusement. It's not to me. It's seriously Censored me off.
I used a humane trap, to catch a Rat then went to release it, and it got out of the the f***** trap whilst I was driving.
It jumped off the passenger seat and went up behind the glove compartment.
Can anyone please tell me, will it be able to get out of its own accord, or will it just die in there and stink the car out?
What to do?
I got a long thin metal wand and tried pushing it up behind the glove compartment and moving it around. Didnt feel anything. Should I leave the door open or what?
Its in a freelander 2
Thanks

My guess would be if you leave the door open it will leave looking for food.

Perhaps record a video overnight so you can check its left for peace of mind.

or trap in foot well with food such as peanut butter, tuna fish, etc.

I'd leave doors shut in dark shaded area. make it nice and quiet / safe for it to venture out.

good luck.

I'd consider the less humane option in future Very Happy

Oh dear , second peanut butter and a less humane style of trap just to be sure !
I believe itโ€™s not technically legal to release a rat or squirrel once caught ๐Ÿ™„ https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

I have extensive experience of dealing with rats (4 legged). It is unlikely that it will be permanently trapped up inside your dash. I would go with Caterham's suggestion. Set a trap, either humane or killer with some bait (bread with lots of peanut butter is good). Put the trap in footwell and close all doors, leave overnight. Two things could possibly happen overnight, either the rat will be in the trap (either alive or dead depending on the type of trap) or there will be no sign of the rat but the bait will have been taken or disturbed. If it's the latter this will confirm that the rat is still in the vehicle.

You definitely need to trap it for peace of mind. Defender 90XS SW

Thanks guys.

Ive put a victory pro trap this time in the footwell baited with half a monkey nut on the pressure plate. I think it must have bloody died from shock inside the car somewhere. I hope its got out somehow tbh

I believe itโ€™s not technically legal to release a rat or Gray squirrel once caught your right not legal to release a rat or gray squirrel once caught as they class as vermin must be killed be care fall as rats are incontinent and Weil's Disease (Leptospirosis) Weil's disease is a form of a bacterial infection also known as Leptospirosis that is carried by animals, most commonly in rats and cattle. It can be caught by humans through contact with rat or cattle urine, most commonly occurring through contaminated fresh water.

What are the first signs of Weil's disease?
In humans, Leptospirosis can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:
High fever.
Headache.
Chills.
Muscle aches.
Vomiting.
Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
Red eyes.
Abdominal pain.

There are about 50 cases of Weils disease each year in the UK and it can kill, it leaves you feeling very ill even in its early stages and you need to notify your doctors if you feel you may have come into contact with rats urine etc. We carry cards for work to hand to the doctor because of the work we do.

Thatโ€™s also why on holiday never ever drink from a bottle i.e an old fashioned glass coke bottle because before being placed in a fridge itโ€™s probably been stored outside and the rats may well have scampered over the crates urinating as they do and then you put the bottle in your mouth. 2015 HT XS 90

Funny you should mention that Sulisuli. My mate is a publican and he won't drink from a glass bottle for the same reason. Oh and also because dogs often pee on the crates.

If it was me, Iโ€™d leave something climbable like wire. Leave a window open about 2โ€ and place it up to there. That way they would find their way out believe you me.

Otherwise as you know if trapped in the vehicle they will chew their way out. Pity you canโ€™t disconnect the battery too but you may not be able to lock it then.. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Look on the bright side Brig.
It may try and crawl through one of the many sources of leaks in the Defender, get trapped in the hole and help solve any water ingress Very Happy
Joking apart, I hope you can find a way to coax it out.
