Enjoying the thread, but I hope it doesn't encourage anyone to sell the kids, and take on a second mortgage, just to own an 80".
Yes, they are pretty and can be fun. Click image to enlarge But honestly, you can have just as much fun in a later coilsprung Land Rover - and be a lot more comfortable too. Click image to enlarge So my advice would be not to get desperate or break the Bank to own a Series One - as a Lightweight, Series Two or Ninety will bring plenty of smiles at a quarter of the price. (Just my opinion, but I've had 'em all over the years, and still own four Series Ones (bought long ago) so I have a bit of perspective...... ) |

If you buy a cheap series one you will spend ten times more on parts and fixing it.
2.0L engine parts are crazy money now and they're not a great engine anyway. cams, cam bearings, rockers and pistons would easy be £1400 if not more. If you do buy one do plenty of research and take someone that genuinely knows them with you. The chassis were unavailable for a while there and bulkheads (quality ones) waiting list was a at least a year! |

Series one chassis are now available again from Richards and there are at least three suppliers of quality bulkheads, some with little or no waiting time, depending on which type you need.

I would agree with the first comment, however the engines for their time were a good engine and very suitable for the job they were designed to do in a slogging farm vehicle. The later 2 litre spreadbore is probably the best as it has a much better and more accessible oil filter and starter motor. Prices for new engine parts as NickMc says are very expensive these days compared with the later S2/3 engines and its quite possible to drop in a later 2.25L engine in a S1 if you are not too worried about originality. |

Indeed, as above. My 86" currently has a 3-bearing 2286cc petrol in it (I don't like the 5-bearing unit) and the installation is 100% reversible. The 2286 makes the vehicle more usable in modern traffic without altering its essential character. Curiously though the 2286 is not so good in deep water since the distributor is significantly lower than that on the 1.6 and 2.0 engines. On 7.50s, with the 2.1/4 engine and overdrive, it can (if you are very brave or stupid and have the necessary stopping distance) get the speedometer needle off the dial.
I seem to recall that it is harder to fit a 2286 in an 80" and that it is not so reversible. In the 86/88/107/109 it is totally reversible as long as you keep the bits that come off. The hardest change in many ways is the radiator which needs the bottom outlet swapped to the other side, I was lucky when I did mine (c. 1985) and was able to buy the world's last new-old-stock S1 diesel radiator. |

With a bit of metal bashing, shoehorning and some ingenuity, you could even coax a V8 into an 80" !!
Click image to enlarge Having said that, with the eye watering prices now being asked for tidy originals, it would be punishable by death to butcher a dear old girl in this way nowadays. But it sure as hell was fast off the line and baffled quite a few would be boy racers To think, I even took the original 1600cc engine and ancillaries to the scrap metal dealer and replaced the bulkhead mounted steering box (with Bakelite centre horn and dip switch unit) with a later chassis mounted SII box |

An awful lot of 80s, 86s and 88s died to produce V8 triallers back then. Little did we know that 40 years on and half decent unmolested examples would be fetching the sort of money that would have bought you a small shabby house back then!
The world is indeed a strange place. I helped a mate fit a V8 into his 86 and by heck it was fun to drive afterwards! The old Ford 3-litre V6 was a popular choice as well. |

Nice find James, that will clean up very nicely indeed.
Unfortunately, Series Ones with that kind of originality and patina don't usually go cheap. Will be interesting to see what it makes. |

This one is in Hampshire now and will happily take you to Siberia driven at the correct speed. (It has a canvas top!)
Was a nightmare registering it, (the DVLA inspector read a numeric 3 on the barely visible chassis number where previous docs had read it as a 1 ... aarrggh ) but well under way at last. Almost ready to go ... Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |
