2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Corris Grey

Dremel decided to try and quit....

Hi,

Been giving the dremel a hammering and it decided to get very hot and have a little smoke.

Now, if I turn it on it runs very slowly and immediately gets hot and starts to smoke again.

Having seen you can buy all the parts online, I stripped it down. Everything looks fine inside on the boards, the only thing I have spotted is this tiny burn;

Is this a sign that one of the windings has a short and has cooked it self?

I can replace the part in the picture above, but it’s the most expensive part on the list, so just wanted a second opinion before I clicked buy.

Sounds like it is cooked

When this happened to mine ,I took the opportunity to upgrade and get a new one as the cost of new versus repair was not that great I thought. Also , if you have given it a hammering then it may also have worn other bits that are yet to fail completely .

2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Java Black

If you've got a compressor, chuck the dremel and buy a micro/turbine grinder. One will run fine of a 50l DIY compressor. They are much lighter and easier to hold than a Dremel with no highly strung motor to burn out. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Usually when the armature burns out the field coil isn't far behind either. In work I replace both and a set of brushes on drills/breakers etc.

Personally I favour CP (Chicago Pneumatic). They tend to be pricey but are industrial tools. At the cheaper end of the market I have had reasonable performance out of SIP tools.

I’ve got the. Chicago Pneumatic air micro grinder and love it. If you get one, make sure you keep it lubed, they don’t last if you run them dry. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
