2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Chawton White

Oil cooler keep failing

Hi

Not me, but another chap with a 2.4 110 2010 and 190.000 km on the clock. He is in his 4th oil cooler. 2 first were original LR branded. Last 2 were unbranded and cheap.

First one lasted around 100kkm.
2nd about 80kkm
3rd about 8kkm
4th about 2kkm

The last 3 oil coolers failed when pushing hard the enginne but under 3500 revs. Since new using 5w-30 oil

I was thinking the oil pump relief valve could be the issue?

Any further feedback much appreciated.

PD. What is the max oil pressure figure for the 2.4 tdci? Puma 110" SW

I’ve just replaced the thermostat in my oil cooler as it was leaking coolant and it didn’t have the thermostat in from new,so maybe leave the thermostat out.

Found this on a Ford Transit forum regarding the 2.4 Puma :

My oil pressure @ idle is ~30-35psi when cold....TBH...it doesn't change much even when warm, maybe 2-3psi or so. Ford's spec for min oil pressure @ idle is a tad over 18psi, and 29.4psi @ 2000rpm.

I have no idea if the details are correct.

Not sure if engine oil pressure is reported through the OBD diagnostics or not, but if so, you could check the pressure and compare to the numbers above. Or if not, temporarily fit a pressure gauge with a tee piece into the oil pressure warning switch location.

2015 Defender 130 Puma 2.2 HCPU Alpine White

My 2.2 oil pressure is;
Idle cold 48 psi
Idle hot 24 psi
2400 rpm hot 54 psi
ECU will not read oil pressure.
I have fitted an oil filter adapter which has pressure and temp.

Wow, that is a lot of oil cooler failures for that vehicle. I've never heard of failures on that component before, so there must be something strange going on.

FYI, on my 2010 2.4, the oil pressures are:

cold idle: 5.4 (winter) - 5 (summer) bar
hot idle: 1.6 bar
hot under load (120kmh/2500rpm): 4.5-5 bar --

That corresponds to my readings of my 2.4 as well with the Madman system
