Visiting Bristol area with family: sightseeing tips welcome!
Just a few more nights and I am visiting the UK together with my family (Mr + Mrs + 8yo + 3yo). We will be staying just south-west of Bristol and I was hoping to get some good insiders' sightseeing tips from the locals, i.e. you!

I have already spotted https://www.ssgreatbritain.org/your-visit/things-to-see/ship that I personally think is going to be great for both me รกnd the children (although perhaps more for me Laughing), so that's definitely on the list. But where else to go? We don't plan to do a huge number of trips, nor go on very long/exhausting ones (small children!), but I sure would like to see some of the country while there, rather than just stay in one place for 10 days.

Of course, the internet has a lot of tips on where to go / not go, but these tend to focus on the obvious. Quite often, the locals know of much better places to go, and I would love to hear from you. Thanks, and maybe see you around!*

*) if you see a Dutch black V70 estate driving on the wrong side of the road, please cut me some slack. And if you're driving a Landy, I may just wave as a reflex... Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

If you're going to the SS Great Britain you could also take a loop up to the Clifton suspension bridge - quite a view from up there.

If you're SW of Bristol you could also consider visiting the Somerset levels and sampling some of the more robust ciders brewed there - they're one of the local specialities.

The Mendips and Cheddar Gorge are definitely great suggestions too.

Bath, Wells and Glastonbury especially Glastonbury Tor.

When are you going?

November is Carnival season in Somerset and thatโ€™s something worth seeing.

Really enjoyed a guided pirate walk around Bristol harbour last week. Lots of great history and all the more fun if you dress up like pirates like we did. Smile

RoadForce,

We see a lot of Dutch visiting the SW, hope you enjoy it.

Some great suggestions above. Being mindful you have young kids, Bristol Zoo is worth a look - its in Clifton, just up the road from the famous bridge. Its not huge but its a lovely place to spend a good few hours, especially in Summer.

If you are going to SS Great Britain you could always hop on the Harbour Ferrys and visit other bits of the city easily, the harbourside itself is worth a walk around (some great pubs too).

Hope you have a cracking time!

Cheers, Paul

Outside of Bristol you might enjoy visiting Berkeley castle & depending on the age of your children there's cattle country near Berkeley too.

The Newt @ Somerset is worth a visit (near castle Cary) and Hauser & Wirth near Bruton. You also have Longleat and Stourhead, near Warminster.

The SS Great Britain, as mentioned, and the area nearby is now full of shipping containers converted to food stores. Bath is a pretty city to explore if you want to see nice architecture etc.

Oooh that looks like a place I'd like to visit, but I don't think the family feels the same (the Mrs + 2 girls...). I may have to just go by myself then Whistle Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
