Looking at the spec and pricing it looks more like a replacement for the Discovery 5 than it does the Defender. One has to ask the question who is going to buy it? Certainly not the majority of current Defender owners, not the farmers, foresters and other trades people who bought pickups from Japanese manufacturers and later European manufacturers that entered the pickup market. Some potential customers may well be disgruntled Disco 5 owners (unfortunately I know quite a few) but unfortunately they are not going to grow the overall market share for JLR. I hope they haven't employed the suspension set up from the Disco 5 as that handles like a fishing trawling in a 30 foot swell on the road.

We have definitely lost our icon unlike Jimny, Wrangler and G Wagon. Yes I'll be definitely taking a test drive of the new Defender but the cheque book will be staying at home. Defender 90XS SW

The most disappointing thing for me is that the larger 110 (is assume they meant 130) will be available as an 8 seater only, so it is essentially a people carrier!

I was really optimistic about this, but unfortunately it is way out of my price range and doesn’t appear to be anything like an alternative to an actual defender. Shame, but I wouldn’t sell my 90 anyway! Also looks like it will do nothing other than cannibalise the rest of the range which is sad given how much bother JLR are in at the moment.

Looking at prices for the Velar I'm guessing they will start at €70.000 over here. Now I really don't care for the looks anymore. Laughing

I really cannot fathom JLRs marketing or sales strategy any more. I had put their current lineup into a chart by price.

If you want to spend around £45k so new Defender money, you have a pick of 7 out 10 models in their lineup. Talk about market saturation.

It seems clear from this that they are marketing this in the Discovery / F-Pace market. But I cannot understand why. This is isn't going to draw additional buyers, it's going to cannibalise their existing sales surely.

Even their own marketing slides say this is aimed at affluent "adventurous" singles/couples. You know, the type of people who'd cuurently buy a Discovery or F-Pace....

I'm sure that JLR have plenty of charts that they have available to them, very similar to Freypal's. So I'm just as intrigued as Freypal as to what demographic they are hoping to pitch the new Defender at. Looking at the specs and pricing it is clearly a mixture of a tough off roader and a Chelsea tractor, possibly a cheaper alternative to the G wagen yes but that market alone is not going to keep the Slovak factory working at full chat. I'm not sure the mainstream SUV market will absorb many sales - I cannot see the Q5, Q7, X3 and X5 drivers making a shift to the new Defender. Defender 90XS SW

if we look at your chart, the cheapest LR with low range is the Defender - this is why it will sell Thumbs Up --

I think it will sell.........but too a new breed of Defender enthusiasts and not many Defender2 members will buy one, even if they could afford it.

I don't believe LR are doing the icon proud!

Are you sure it has low range? The article that started this thread say it has the same driveline as other Landrover products; how many of those now actually have a transfer box and proper low range?

Blackwolf I think the "low range" was referring to the lowest price in each model

The full size Discovery and Range Rover, and RR Sport all have a transfer box that offers low range and there's no reason to think the new Defender won't have one either. The only exception may be a full electric version as a similar effect can be achieved through control systems, but that's supposition on my part. Darren

I agree it may well sell in half decent numbers but im struggling to see how those sales won't come at the expense of the D5.

If I were inclined to spend that much on a capable 4x4, I'd rather have the new Defender from what I've seen rather than the D5 as I think the D5 is hideous. But that wouldn't be a net gain for LR in sales terms...
