108 litres and only 576hp! But the torque must be awesome.

Interesting that the motor was designed for gensets on the ill-fated Bismarck and Tirpitz.

I'm pretty sure that the startup process would have been the same every time.

I can remember, back in about 1977, starting a Deltic diesel on a "Ton" class minesweeper using a cartridge start device. It is the only time I have ever had the opportunity to use a cartridge start system and was quite memorable.

The noise, even with ear defenders, was memorable too.

Very interesting, but more interesting to me would be the "history" of that engine,...what id did do in WW11 & since, where it was found etc....Has anyone any info on this aspect?
