Puma Engine wiring Harness
On a recent trip to Morocco the engine went into limp home mode with a Turbor sensor A wiring circuit fault Big Cry . This turned out to be a broken wire on the plug attaching the engine wiring harness to the Turbo control box.

This is a real weak point as the wiring goes throughs a sharp angle into the plug and repeated shaking appears to be damaging all of the wires. I managed to get a bodge done but am now looking for a new wiring harness for the engine.

Does anyone know the part no for this harness? Ken

Yes this is a known problem and there is a service bulletin for. You don’t need the complete loom there is a repair kit for this problem. If nobody beats me to it Rolling with laughter i’ll try to find the bulletin.

Be aware also that generally the engine harness is not very satisfactory for vehicle used in anything remotely resembling arduous conditions. The harness is extremely prone to chafing at every point where it is in contact with the engine. The designer clearly though that the only protection the harness needs is convoluted sleeving, which is wholly inadequate

I suffered turbo problems which turned out to be caused by the wires to the actuator becoming completely severed due to chafing at the point where the harness passes the top front of the engine. Although an easy repair, it was sobering to see that the main feed from the alternator to the battery was similarly chafed, to the point where bare conductors were visible. I have absolutely no idea how it is that this didn't cause a major fire (I think that I spotted it just in time). This connection between the battery and the alternator is not fused at either end, so would cause a dead short to ground of both the battery and the alternator output if the engine is running. It doesn't really bear thinking about and can have only one result.

If my vehicle is representative of the quality of TDCi Defenders in general, it is wonder that spontaneous combustion isn't a widespread occurrence.

I strongly recommend that you check the harness throughout its length.

8-( I'll check that.

From at least MY2012 there is an unfused cable from the alternator to the starter motor (from there it continues to the battery via 500A fuse). Is that one prone to chafing?

One of the recommended work stated by my mechanic after my Defender got dunked is to replace all the wiring harnesses as the dunking will have caused corrosion and will eventually give me gremlins.

Anyone know where I can get new ones that won't require me to sell organs or maybe someone who can make better harnesses from scratch?

Defender.net is a huge source of information!

Probably I have the same fault now.
Near randomly lack of turbo, rough driving and high fuel consumption.

Engine Harness looks quite worn in the area were the cables passes the engine, so probably is the fault.

So I will check during weekend to see if that solves the issue.

Cheers and thanks! Eduardo
