16 days is plenty.
I didn’t get to do the whole of it But I do think it is worth it. And if you haven’t been, got to Applecross. It is also well worth it. Fabio |

Worth downloading gpx route onto a sat nav as you can enjoy the scenery rather than looking at an atlas. The west coast is stunningly beautiful. We spent two nights at most stops to have time to explore and go walking.

Sounds a great idea, not rushing it. Don’t know much about this route, are there places to stay at good intervals or are they few and far between?

I do believe that my tomtom has the route on it - We also have a north coast book, and that has all the necessary addresses in it - so we can just follow that Regards

for Plockton. About 15 miles off the official NC500 route, but worth the detour in my opinion.
Gets very busy in the summer months, be sure to book accommodation well in advance and particularly evening meals. I can recommend the Plockton Inn (dog friendly) and the Plockton Hotel. There is a chippy in the village if you get stuck..... |

Were going out of season (not in school holidays) so hopefully wont be too busy, and were doing camp sites only. But ill add Plockton to the list.

You'll enjoy it - especially if you take your time. Do remember our school holidays are different to yours. Up here it's usually 6 weeks - July and the first two weeks of August.
I think you said you were going anti-clockwise? Campsites everywhere - Golspie, Brora, John O Groats, Bettyhill, Tongue, Talmine, Durness, Kinlochbervie, Scourie, Ardmair, Ullapool, Laide, Aultbea, Gairloch, Shieldaig, LochCarron etc etc Loads! I think even out of school holidays this is just a busy route now, so even campsites might be full. If you are keen on facilities like showers and toilets it might well be worth guesstimating where you'll be in th evening and phoning ahead to book a space. I've not been around since it was branded the NC500, though I have driven on long sections of it. As a 'local', who doesn't work in tourism, it's something of a mixed blessing. It's good to see the area busy - but the roads can get pretty chokka. Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. RR classic - fitted with 200Tdi 1984 RR classic - V8 with ZF auto box 1993 Discovery 300Tdi not to mention the minis and the Type 2 VW camper... |
