Dave, very many thanks for you reply, I was hoping you'd spot my question and provide the definitive answer, and I thought that that might be the case.

All I can say is that I am glad I didn't buy a very late model Defender! Do you have any idea when (chassis no, or t-box no) that this final great "enhancement" was introduced? The one in my photo I think came out of an 81D prefix box.

Crazy.... the LT230 is renound as the most hardy part of a LR drivetrain (even amongst Jeep owners)

So LR fininsh production with a more powerful engine, more torque, and a weaker intermediate shaft and weaker t/box

Just shows the idiots are in charge of the asylum!

Is/was the LT230 made by LR or is it supplied by a gearbox manufacturer? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

It's good to see that before production ended they 'performed system integration' and brought the transfer box 'in line' with everything else ensuring they all work (fail) in harmony.

I find it staggering. I'd have thought on such a relatively low production number that it didn't cost more to instigate the change than it did to save money? crackers.

This is quite interesting (anorak mode on), I guess they thought that most people buying them in the last couple of years were not going to ever actually work them hard so it didn't matter if it was a bit weaker! Whistle

I would doubt that much thought went into it.
My guess is the decision went little further than £

Hi,

the top one is stock used on most LT230's

the lower one is the very late TDCi stock open diff, open 2 pin design

used for approx last 2 years of production, major step backwards, making the weak link even weaker !!

I guess just a cost saving exercise, certainly not an improvement,

If I've got this right, Puma Defenders had a reputation for blowing 2 pin diffs in the front axle. So much so that Landrover decided to change the 110 front diff to 4 pin.
Then they fitted a 2 pin diff in the transfer box for their valued customers... Thud Banging Head

I wonder how many forum contributors are reading this thread with a sinking feeling and thinking "I probably have one of those in my transfer box".
