Oil inside Intake Manifold
I've a 2001 TD5. On recent inspection of the Intake Manifold, I've still got a lot of oil (not blocked but coating all around the inside of the manifold) despite it being some years since I removed the EGR+pipework, and told by 'an-expert' it would clear itself out over the next few years of driving.

My question to gauge opinion is - how much effort should I make to try and properly clean this out?

I've plenty of other jobs I can distract myself with and don't want to waste the effort it's going to be negligible difference, but I can't help feeling having the thing in such as state can't be helping it much.

Thoughts appreciated. Cheers Defender 90 - Tomb Raider LE

When I removed mine recently (about 125k miles with EGR removed from about 60k miles) it was clean as a whistle so I would suggest you have a problem somewhere.

Maybe crankcase breather valve failed or turbo leaking oil into the high pressure side of the compressor? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

thank you for the quick response and confirmation of my thoughts.

The breather hose on mine does look a mess on the outside, but I didn't spend the extra five minutes to check inside and see what state it was in - so will add that to the list.

Fingers crossed I don't have a major issue..

Just as a follow up to this original message.

I finally got around to cleaning it and other than causing a heck of mess and stinking of degreaser for the next few days the clean out has made a real difference. State of the manifold was as bad as described - full coated in oil.

Following a few rounds of cleaning - it came up a treat and on replacement has meant a real difference in smoke (now almost gone) and the flat-spot under acceleration looks to have disappeared also.

Really not that difficult to do -just a pain for the mess and you need tiny-hands to get to some of the bolts.

I also replaced the breather hose with a new one and both have stayed clean following this work.

A few years ago I used a can of 10K Diesel on a 300TDI that had a severe oily problem, could just about get my little finger in the intake that's how bunged up it was. 10k Diesel cleared it all out (intercooler and all) perfectly.

Might be worth a try.

Cheers geobloke - i've not seen that before and will definitely try it if it gets bad again.

Certainly trying to jet-wash the manifold out with gunk and hot-water made a terrible mess and got me a huge clean up job. Defender 90 - Tomb Raider LE

Re: Dishwasher - that was my thought also but was persuaded by the impending pain i would likely get from the other-half if / when she found out. Not worth the grief... Defender 90 - Tomb Raider LE

Yes, you need to keep the dishwasher's weekend job a secret from the Domestic Authorities.
