LT230 Differential question
All the LT230 differentials that I have ever seen have looked like the photo below, and have 4 differential gears.



Recently however I have come across a new take-out centre diff unit that looks like this:



Clearly quite different, two diff gears only, and looking a bit "value engineered". Has anyone seen one like this before? Is it a later version/earlier version? Anyone know anything about it?

Thats news to me. Maybe cheaper to build.

Std design were prone to break the pins. At least have seen a couple. Puma 110" SW

Yes, it's a two gear (single cross pin) centre diff. It has me puzzled because I'd never seen one before.

Apparently this type was used on the final production vehicles, which raises some interesting questions. Did JLR run out of normal diffs and get these made on the cheap, or were these a redesign to beef up the diff (with bigger gears) for the 70th V8 specials? The mystery deepens.

I imagine machining the 2 piece "usual" diff costs more than casting one piece. And I also imagine the new Defender does not come with the LT230 Question Puma 110" SW

I think the 70th editions come with the Ashcroft atb diff.

No, the top one is a standard diff out of any standard LT230 transfer box (any except for ones with a diff like the lower one anyway).

I assure you that the top one is a normal open differential for the LT230 as fitted to pretty much every LT230 (with the exception Blackwolf has noted) as stated by the OP.

There is no doubt whatsoever about the top one, the top one isn't in question. It's the second one that's the mystery.

Hi,

the top one is stock used on most LT230's

the lower one is the very late TDCi stock open diff, open 2 pin design

used for approx last 2 years of production, major step backwards, making the weak link even weaker !!

I guess just a cost saving exercise, certainly not an improvement, Dave
