Acc earth - via bodywork or by separate cable?
Hey there,

I'm fitting a Raptor console shortly, and just planning the electrics. 1994 300Tdi 110sw.

Some of the items will use the existing loom (albeit extended in a couple of instances) so no worries there.

The 'new' or extra stuff will be:
    CB radio,
    12v cigarette lighter socket,
    tacho/rev counter
    boost gauge,
    Madman,
    Dashcam.

Of these the only one with any significant power draw will be the 12v socket potentially - but more likely just charging small devices.

So for the power supply side I'm just going to run a 25amp cable up the outside of the bulkhead, and then into a fused distribution box. Simples, I think.

On the earth side. The Raptor instructions say one fitting bolt, which goes through a part of the bulkhead, can be left long and used as an earth post. I'm sure this would work, but what are the pros and cons (if any) of this approach versus also running an earth cable back to the battery box via some sort of busbar arrangement?

Up to a point it's the same thing - combining all the earth connections in one place - the questoin is then to earth via the bodywork, or back to battery.

The 'earth post'/mounting bolt seems easier, and if there's no real reason to do anything else, then I'll go with that. If there's a benefit to running a cable to the battery, I can do that easily enough.

Any thoughts at all?

Ta as always. Donald

It will doubtlessly work fine with all the earth's from your console together locally on a stud providing that the console is earthed to the body via its mountings (I don't know how it is mounted). However being a fan of belt and braces I would also run a wire from the battery negative terminal to that earth stud then you can always be sure of a good secure connection to the battery earth. This is what I have done with the extra accessories fitted behind my TD5 dash.

Thanks Mo,

One of the console mounts is a bolt through the back of the dash, into the bulklhead, just below the ashtray, so I guess if paint was cleaned etc etc it would provide a decent earth.

I also thought about your suggestion, of an additional earth cable back to the battery from that combined stud - but my very next thought (overthinking it, no doubt!) was: "what if all the other earth current decided this cable was then an easier route to earth...?"

I guess there's something in electrical theory that would discount any issues with that. The only problem is I don't have too much electrical theory knowledge!

At the moment, I'm leaning towards a 'bus bar'/combined earth, cabled directly back to the battery box. There's a big 'blue sea' distribution box/earth posts in there that I can route it to. Donald
