But which roof tent...

Hi Guys,

Probably covered in various small threads but noting that answers my specific questions...

Which is the best roof tent, for under £2000 new? Mrs doesn't want a used one.

Options so far:

1. Tuff Trek Mohave - like the fact it's a hard shell and a good price. Quality and warmth I've seen questioned?
2. Howling Moon - Not sure what size and think the company is bust?
3. Ventura - Cheap, like under £1000. Quality?
4. iKamper Skycamp 2.0 - this is probably the favourite, but almost double the budget...

Any advice welcome! Are there any group discounts? I'm based in Edinburgh and driving a 2009 90 with a Flatdog rack on it.

Seriously, the best tent for you at any price point depends on how you want to camp, how often you want to use it and where you want to use it - temperature and climate.

I moved from a fabric 'ARB Simpson' type to a Autohome Columbus hard shell pop-up.
Moving site everyday, or just driving to the shop, became a chore packing up and zipping the cover, climbing up and down to so. The Columbus just pops up on gas struts and is ready to sleep in in 30 seconds, almost as quick to pack up.
It's not as big as the canvas tent, but I'm happy with the compromise.

Also you'll probably want to consider an awning or shelter. Again this will depend on your needs.
A Khyam 'Motordome tourer' has done us for the past 7 years occasional use. It's a motor home awning, lightweight, fine for UK and Europe but a bit too light multiple, extended overland trips.

Don't rely on the biased recommendation of someone that has only used (invested in) one type or uses it in a different way to you.

I have the arb Simpson and thinking going hard shell. Was looking at the tufftrek my self as so light so gives me a 40kg reduction in weight the equivalent to two Jerry cans. Would like to see one in the flesh.

2006 Defender 110 Td5 USW Zermatt Silver

Best in my opinion is a Maggi. The hard shell makes it ideal for uk/Europe where the weather can be wet for days. Very dark inside, very waterproof due to water running off the solid roof, warm, as is small enough that you warm it, and it’s insulated top and bottom, great quality, not all flappy like fabric tents in a wind. No climbing about to erect, or put away. Bed can be made up, for us it was proper quilt, pillows, under mattress vent mesh and memory foam topper, and just left made up all the time. Not bothered by trees and undergrowth whilst off road. No extra noise whilst driving. Even distribution of weight. Many vent, window, door options, so easily kept cool.

Down sides, cost, takes up large amount of room.

But it’s the fastest to setup, and look at the resale prices. I had mine for over 10 years, and still made a profit.

The Tuff trek looks good but almost too good to be true? It’s half the weight and cheap, but the pictures on their site don’t show any great detail of the actual tent. Anyone have first hand experience or read a review? 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Is it so cheap because of the lack of insulation ?
If there was none, you could enjoy condensation and rain showers in colder nights

and a maggi also doesnt flap around in the breeze keeping you awake, mine is much quieter than my old hannibal. if i was going for a soft tent I'd go gordigear (i had one of those too, way better than most other foldover tents for quality and design). 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent
