I think that the given the nature of Defender ownership, most of us on this forum would have an interest in extreme engineering. I saw this on my travels yesterday, sadly the photo does not do justice to the impressiveness of the engineering.
Will try and get a better shot when I head back tomorrow.

Would be interested to understand the purpose of the project?
I do suspect that the work has not been Engineered with the same integrity as the industries I work in. Just look at the tree on the right of the building, I know these trees have very small root ball spread but one good downpour and I expect that tree to into the “swimming pool” 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

That is impressive keeping the building standing but what/why/how? Too many questions to what is going on? Moat? Underground extension? James

You beat me to it. I would also suggest that if the tree were to shall we say disappear can you imagine to amount of electricity they would save on light those rooms. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Huge efoort to keep the house in place (probably due the historic value).
But whats the idea for such excavation? Maibe some construction with view to the lake? Probably the tree is condemned. Roots has been cut in a big proportion and probably, if the tree will be keep, will die more soon than later. Sorry, should have explained the background. It’s the old Annecy hospital site and (no surprise) is being knocked down and turned into luxury apartments. The building in the photo is a listed property (the original hospital) and that type of tree is protected. Here’s some info with some 3D images...

Not too bad with the guess
