Green lane live mapping
Evening all,

I just returned from a day out in wales on a few lanes.

Now i have os maps on my phone and i do a bit of research before hand. This is perfect aslong as i have signal. ( today was hit and miss )

Now am i missing a trick here, should i get an ipad on the dash and screenshot certain maps?

Id love a way of live tracking if you guys know a way?

Kind regards

Tom

Assuming you're using the OS app, I'm sure it has a download/offline option

OS Maps app has the facility to upload purchased maps so you don't need a cell signal. They recently updated it. I find it works very well. Pretty sure I was on the exact same lane in your picture not so long ago.

Not that I think it's relevant in your case, but if you had the previous version (OS Mapfinder) and had purchased map tiles on this app, which is no longer supported, they will convert them over to OS Maps so your purchases aren't lost.

If you have a subscription to OS Maps (£20 a year) you get the whole of the UK available in 50k and 25k and can download areas to your device so it can be used offline.

I normally make sure I download any areas I expect to visit beforehand if I can. As has already been said, you can also download any paper maps you have purchased without a subscription if they have the digital code on the cover. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

If you have the full version of Alpine Quest, this supports, if you can find them the QCT files as used by MemoryMap - the older version before. This has tracking facility and also access to a selection of maps.

I think you can also download a map of an area before hand.

I use AlpineQuest and then older QCT files from MemoryMap on my tablet and works well. Also you can mark waypoints etc. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have View ranger and OS maps that works very well for me - but on a stand alone Samsung tablet that has a proper GPS system and not a wifi/mobile phone signal requirement like many iPhones and ipads have ... the samsung has been used in the middle of dartmoor were there was no mobile or wifi signal with no issues

Another +1 for Viewranger.
I got the whole UK on 1:50,000 series OS maps from Vievranger. They occasionally do special offers, I believe that cost me less than £100. Seamless scrolling from Lands End to John O'Groats, no changing maps or downloading.
Run it on a SIM equipped iPad mini for the GPS, but no active contract on the sim, so no charges for a data connection.
A Ram Mount to hold it, all works perfect.
Always know exactly where we are, even when the passenger can't read OS maps, and where to turn. Go off course by few metres and you know it. Worth every penny.
