Cheapest, most effective soundproofing
Just thought I'd share today's task:

The cheapest most effective soundproofing I've done so far!

I found a TD5 discovery (manual) that was being broken near me and paid £5 for the sound proofing that sits over the bell housing.

So out with the floor and transmission tunnel, a bit of surgery with a jigsaw and hey presto - a huge difference, even though I already have the wright off road moulded matting.

At the same time I added a bit more camping mat.

I reckon if your defender has the r380 gearbox, this would be even easier!

I've previously already added the silentcoat / stinger road kill to dampen the panels vibrating.

Fantastic find and an excellent idea. Doesn't the gearbox get too hot without wind cooling?

I hope not Very Happy

Seriously though, its only the top of the front half of the gearbox that is covered. The rest is still exposed.

I suppose on a long run through Europe or something, any risk could be mitigated against by using top quality lubricants and maintaining a correct oil level.
The advantage with an R380 would be the ease of fitting an oil cooler.
