Ha ha, ignored and carrying on.
The switch won't be on the dash, it'll be in the back, so can't jsut switch it on when I want to reverse. It's not so much extra effort to do it properly, I've got all the bits, so not a great cost either. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

For info, it is definitely illegal to have the worklight come on with reverse or to use it as a reversing light in a place to which the public has access (ie c&u and rvlr etc apply). Also there must be a warning light on dash or in the switch.
It is also illegal to use a worklight on a public highway unless it is used in conjunction with an amber flashing beacon. |

Brill, cheers for the info.
It's crazy the amount of different laws around lights on cars. If the country concentrated more on things that really matter, the UK might not be the sh!thole it currently is. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Why not use an LED work light?
IF I remember correctly maximum wattage for a reversing light is 21 watts and I believe only two reversing lights are allowed. We have twin LED work/camp lights on rear of Puma switched from front dash (illuminated) OK reversing from road onto drive it is illegal to use them Great as a camping lamp OK LED lights costs more then the standard 55 watt work light (say £10-25) with current draw of ca. 5 amps Vision X single LED 10 watt lamp has light output of 900 lumens and costs about £90 current draw about 0.8 amps Rubber bodied 6 LED has light output of about 420 lumens and cost about £60 current draw about 0.45 amp Ali bodied 6 LED with unknow light output costs about £40 and draws about 0.1 amp Initial LED lamp cost higher then 55 watt lamp, but no need for relay, heavier wiring etc. Can leave on for much longer periods of time without fear of running down battery . Brendan, I am looking for a hand held light that can also be clipped onto a fixing point for flexibilty. It will be plugged straight into a 12V socket from the spare wires behind the rear quarter panel rated at 20 AMPS I believe. Do you sell anything like that - would LED be best, a general light would be better for me (e.g Awning light coverage rather than a spot light, low battery drain is more important than light power ) - Can't see anything on your site

LED does sound interesting, but I've already got a work light hanging around to fit, so will go with that for now.
Still not 100% convinced I'm going to put the whole reversing light thingy, just because of the legal side, however, the 3 position switch should cover me for that. I might even add a warning light at the dash to let me know when it's on, but that's an extra cable run back to the front...... After sleeping on it, I thought, nah, maybe not.............
......it wasn't complex enough ( ), so I went back to the drawing board changed it to 2 switches, one on the dash and one in the back so that it can be turned on/off at either. A 5 pin relay to allow the switching between reverse light and override switches (which avoids 2 power feeds at the same time) and a Warning LED. Ditched the "total off" idea as there is a switch on the actual worklight if it needs to be disabled. for the MOT maybe!. The only thing I'll probably change is switch the Reverse Light and Tail light connections over on the Relay, otherwise, the Relay will be constantly engergised when the lights are on rather than energised when the Reversing light is on. Only downside is the switches are now back on the main feed. I know all this sounds complicated and overkill, but hey, why not? ...in the end I saw the light.
As I added a two way switch, one in front and one in back, I couldn't be arsed with the reversing light setup, especially as it's technically not legal. This meant that I could now switch the earth rather than the + meaning one less cable to the front. The diagram shows an LED warning light, I've yet to do this as I didn't have an LED lying around so need to get one. Below are some photos of how I did it just in case it can help anyone else out. The "Purple" and "Black" wires are the constant + and Earth that can be found behind the rear right speaker panel (on a Puma anyway), not sure what fuse this goes to so I fused it down. Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the connections onto the Purple and Black wires. I added a small fusebox, which is also for future use. Next to it is the relay. These have been stuck to the panel with 3M pads. Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the earth cable into the rear switch and the 2 way wires running to the front Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the earth connection from the front switch. Photo taken through the front right speaker hole. The reason for the spare cable is for when I attach the warning LED. Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the cable inside flexible trunking entering the back via a grommet, hated taking a drill to the car! Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the "Self bonding" tape around the end of the trunking, this tape creates a waterproof seal. Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the discreet switch on the dash (the LED will be mounted above) Click image to enlarge The photo below shows the switch in the back, now that the panel has been refitted. Mounted high up to stop if getting turned on accidentally. Tidy. I've placed the rear switch on mine in the same trim panel but on the opposite side. Steve.
