Injector Washers/Seals AGAIN! + Help with Injector Testing
Hi all, once again I am faced with needing to change my injector seals Big Cry

Ok it's not a bad job, but this will be the 3rd time in 12 months I've had to do it.

First time around I had a very slight oil leak on injector 4 around the top of the rocker cover. I had a much bigger oil leak into the cylinder on injector 4 that meant I was constantly loosing oil. Changed washers/seals for aftermarket and all was well.

Second time around (some 9 months later) and despite following the correct tightening procedure one of the bolts came loose, which resulted in injectors 3 and 4 moving slightly along with a horrible tapping sound. Replaced washers/seals on 3 and 4 but this time bought genuine Ford clamp bolts and changed both just in case. Also used a seat cutter to clean the seats, although I didn't want to press too hard so not sure I actually did anything.

This time around I have a significant amount of oil in the well on the rocker cover around injector 3 and I'm loosing oil again - so the job needs doing AGAIN! Doh!

So my questions to you:

Are the genuine washers and seals better than aftermarket and is it better to get them from Land Rover or Ford?

How far can I go with the seat cutter?

Can you recommend anywhere in South Wales that can test these injectors (as no2 readings are a little off)?

FWIW, I remember the local mechanics here in Auckland saying that there is only so much reseating that can be done before you cut in to the cooling. As for how far, no idea, but they were quite cautious about the process. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

What readings for no 2 injector are you using?
Only just done this job myself.
When you changed them are you taking the rocker cover off completely ?
I found you had to to be able clean the seats to get a good seal with washer and cylinder head.
As far as I am aware the main thing to avoid with injectors is them leaking when they are not supposed to. But some one who knows more may enlighten me.
I think some (in my own recent exepience)of these testing places have too much incentive to sell you 4 new injectors and may manipulate the results to suit.

UPDATE:

So after speaking to Ford and LR main dealers I find out they send all their injectors off to be tested. Luckily I know someone at Ford and they advised who it was so I could contact them directly, BCL in Swansea.

Long story short I ended up finding out they are one of very few Bosch/Delphi/Denso specialists and gave them the Landy the next day. They carry all parts on the shelf, including reconditioned injectors approved by Denso.

They removed rocker cover and confirmed it was really caked up in there, so cleaned it all out properly and checked the seats. My advice to anyone doing the injector seals is to remove the rocker cover and clean it, now that I know what it was like it can't be good for the engine.

All four injectors failed testing. The two that were blowing had damaged tips and damaged seats, so it was blowing back injector side of the washer rather than head side by the looks of it. The other two failed on leak back so were over fuelling.

So overall it was an unexpected and unwanted cost but hopefully it's done. For reference I paid £1k for labour, 4 X injectors, all seals inc. rocker cover, the copper washers, oil flush, oil filter, new oil, clamps and bolts.

One thing I didn't know, until it came to doing the pilot learn, was that you can't run it with the clutch switch bridged. I had to remove the bridge before it was successful - I have a new one to go in anyway.

I'm pleased to say it feels like there's a lot more power on tap. It still sounds like a rattly transit (which is a shame) but it's definitely smoother and doesn't knock as much. So overall one happy customer Thumbs Up Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Your mechanic sucks, it’s a Copper washer that seals it, you don’t even need to replace them, clean the seats with a cloth and heat the copper washers up to aneal them so they are malleable, then install with correct torque (?) which is hand tight and a bit

Hi all,

A quick update. Things have improved a lot since the injector renewal. Noticing a lot less smoke on start up and whilst driving. It feels more responsive, not faster but it just seems to pick up better, especially on the motorway. It's also quieter.

I've just done a tank full motorway miles and my mpg is up by 2. Not a lot, but still an improvement Thumbs Up

I was like that at the time, and didn't have that to spare. But now it's done I don't regret it, the engine is so much better for it. I've done 1.5k miles since without issue (apart from splitting an intercooler hose in North Wales last week).

I could have got away with the seals and change them every few months but bad injectors can destroy pistons etc. in these engines so I thought it best to get them tested.

If you don't want to spend £1k you could do it a lot cheaper yourself, the injector testing was only £12+vat each Thumbs Up Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Having had my injector seals replaced twice by two separate garages they were still leaking!

So three weeks ago I followed advice from this thread and removed rocker cover, thoroughly cleaned the injector seats with a rag/screwdriver and reassembled with new seals, gaskets etc.

So far so good with no injector leaks! Plus I discovered a small leak from the rocker cover gasket which the new gasket solved.

Back to this thread again... What size seat cutter did you use? I think the copper washer outside diameter is 13.5mm, presumably I should go a bit bigger to ensure a good seal? I read 17x17 flat on a Transit forum.

I don't intend to actually "cut" the head material, more use the cutter to clean up carbon from the seats > 110 XS Double Cab
