I've managed to put 5W/40 oil in instead of 5W/30. Should I change it or do you think it doesn't matter as the next oil change is in 6K.

Won't really matter as long as the spec of the oil is correct i.e ACEA ratings

A3/B4 oil won't cause a problem, it is a higher spec oil than A1/B1, but it is not a fuel saving oil. (A1/B1 is now a relatively old spec and many mineral based oils can achieve it, A5/B5 being the updated version).
A3/B4 has a higher High tensile stress rating required by some engines, but that doesn't come with fuel saving, otherwise the oil is the same as A5/B5. There are not many x/w/30 oils that achieve A3/B4 normally x/w/40 or above. Steve ![]() Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

ACEA specs do not address the viscosity issue directly. Viscosity and HTHS value is not a direct relationship. Puma 110" SW

Hey, this is all a bit technical for me. I’ve read the label and it says: API SM/CF ACEA A3, B3, B4. Is this ok?

It is not great but it should be ok. Personally I would switch back to the OE specs next time. The engine was (including oil pump) was designed to run a 5W-30 and a very specific one. Have a look to the Opie oils website.

IIRC for Dubai it's an Xw50 or Xw60 oil -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged ![]() ![]() Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I service my car in between the dealer service.
Beginning 2011 I found out Midrand and Centurion Dealers in SA uses Castrol SLX Professional 5W30 I used the same on my "in between service" but would have like to use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 or Even Mobil 1 0W40) (I think 5W30 is to thin for our summer climate and going north over our borders) So this week Land Rover Centurion serviced the Puma and they used Mobil 1 0W40 (And this was not at my request ![]() Now me too will switch from 5W30 to 0W40 or 5W40 Edited since last posting for Clarity: (it is Mobil 1 -- (0W40) I am refering to above) Regards Abrie PS: See ful post at: http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showpo...stcount=13 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i (BMW M52) 2009 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.4 TDCi(Puma) Last edited by astoltz on 1st Jul 2011 10:18am. My dealer has supplied Castrol Magnatec 5w/40 from new. The Defender now has 42,000km on the odo. Car seems to run fine on it and does not consume much of it between services (10,000km interval) and best of all, it seems to stay in the engine and not end up on the ground!
Fuel consumption running this oil is around 10 litres per 100 km - doesn't seem to change much. |
