Ignition Wiring - Help
My key wore out resulting in me being unable to turn the engine off, the key came straight out the barrel!!! So stalled the car in sixth gear but the starter then kicked in and span until I disconnected the earth on the battery. Bit of a burning smell so so hope I've not burnt that out.

I've replaced the ignition barrel but now the ignition will not switch on. I've checked the new barrel with a tester and it works ok.

The key fob locks and unlocks the car OK so assuming that it is not an immobiliser problem.

I've double checked all the connections.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Help appreciated.

Triple check the connections:

Turn the heater fan on (position 3). Turn the key, does the fan come on?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

When you say the ignition doesn't come on, do you mean there's no power to the dash etc?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

When I took the old barrel out it only had three connectors so replicated when replacing. Only to find the forth disconnected itself as connector really loose!

Before you reassemble everything check the terminals are tight enough on the switch tabs so that they won't fall off in future.

Gently pull each wire to see if you can pull the terminal off the switch. You shouldn't be able to without sliding the plastic coloured terminal cover away from the switch first.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yep done that. It’s where two wires both go into one connector that then slides onto barrel. Unfortunately previous owner was crap at electrics and it’s a big mess with lots of old wires randomly cut behind the dash

The original harness isn't like that (there's only one wire per terminal) so sounds like there's been some mods there.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

It’s like everything in life. You spend more time cleaning up other people’s mistakes than it takes to actually get the job done.

Thanks really appreciated your help today. Have a good weekend.
