Sorry should have been clearer... The CTEK only charges the Defender Battery. The Caravan has its own charging facility on-board converting 240 to 12V. I have installed a 240V output Socket (below the standard input) on the Caravan allowing the CTEK to run off this link when plugged into the Defender. Good point I'll check in use. The CTEK does get slightly warm, and probably this has been factored into its design being intended for use in an open environment, and not within an enclosure, in the UK it is unlikely to get too warm, and if used in the summer, or when we get down into southern Europe then I would use it with the 'container' open and also not in direct sun light. The IP65 rating will probably deal with any condensation however used, but again I'll check as I go. This is the set up within the Caravan, I've installed (upgraded) an identical 90AH LR Battery in here (increased from the 70AH originally installed), the thinking being that when travelling we have a backup for the Defender should we have a total failure. I installed the 'hard-wired' CTEK Plug onto this Caravan battery to allow the Reconditioning Cycle charging process offered by CTEK to be periodically run... Only through the 12S (supplementary/second) 7 pin socket - normally white or grey cover. Or a 13 pin.
NOT through the black capped 12N 7 pin socket. If you have ONLY a single 7 pin socket it is 12N and cannot be used for charging. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Right that probably solves why i have two 7 pins - One black and one.
Tried to take a voltage off each but couldn't get anything but might have been because i was looking at the wrong diagram - just presumed that they were the same. I'll do a voltage test one i get it back from the garage to make sure its not switched through the ignition or something. Thanks should save me having to switch out the batteries and taking them off charge!
