If you can fell bias spring tension when pushing the stick to the left and right, I wouldn't have thought that the springs had failed.
It could be that the spring adjustment has wandered off, to check you would need to lift the gear stick gaiter and the dust cover off of the turret to have a look. The spring #8 should have its arms resting on both the pins on the gear stick #7 and the adjustment bolts #5&6. Failing that it could also be the arm on the end of the selector rod has rotated on the shaft, the one that the end of the gear stick operates on. The grub screw that holds it should be thread-locked and locates in a dimple in the shaft so shouldn't move. Hope that helps Click image to enlarge |
