Something occurred to me in reading this thread about how the disco 5 has replaced the freelander "slot", I'm now more convinced than ever that the defender (I refuse to capitalise it) will indeed be a Discovery replacement to all intents and purposes. If they were serious about it as a working vehicle, the test mules we saw would be double cab pickups and work trucks, not disco4 clones. ...

Exactly the view I have been expressing for a very long time now.

JLR is morphing its entire model line up and swapping the names and niches. Defender morphing into what was Discovery is just the next step. It is very, very unlikely that JLR will ever make another vehicle to fulfil the purpose of the outgoing Defender.

Completely agree. The new Defender looks very much like it will be a Disco 4 replacement.

To be clear I'd welcome the quality upgrades, new materials etc etc, is anyone really that bothered about the axles, engines and so on? I dont think so. Heck I bet they could forget van and pickup options without too much hassle, but the main reasons I wont be buying one are the cost (if it does prove to be £40k+) and the fact the styling is far too much of a departure for the outgoing.

I suspect I'm not alone in that view. 2011 110 USW
