Been laid up - should I service?
I’ve been pretty busy over the last few years moving between 3 countries etc etc - hence the Defender has done about 2000 miles in the last 2 years (1000 of that was driving to Germany and back).

It has its final service from a main dealer in 2017 - the service light has just come on and it’s booked into a local independent that I trust. 4th service so should be a big one.

My issue though.... it’s going to be laid up again Shocked probably for the next 2 years. Should I bother getting it done! Or just do the engine oil and leave the rest?

Advice welcome - If I ignore it, what are the risks?

Thanks

Ian

I would do engine oil and filter, a good greasing job of the props, and don’t forget to replace the brake fluid too. Fresh oil and grease are a good thing, while brake fluid is hygroscopic and attracts moisture irrespective of mileage done. That’s why it needs to be replaced every two years.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I honestly wouldn't waste your money.

If it's literally not moving for 2 years potentially, I'd jack it up and leave it on axle stands and not touch it.

when it does come to fire it up, I'd let it turn over for a while first and then let it fire up,

only thing I'd consider in this time is the cambelt detoritating

Cambelt? I'm guessing it's a Puma if it had it's final service in 2017. So it should have a chain shouldn't it?

I'd just do the engine oil and filter.

Thumbs Up

Id do everything Eric suggests, water is you enemy replace any fluids or greases that could contain water. Remembering that even the engine gets condensation forming in it. It is is mistake to change the oil post storage it should be done pre storage. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

you could give it the big one, but again with the mileage its done, are they going to do the service. They maybe taking your money and stamping the book and that's it. I have been told a few stories of places doing that sort of thing, due to the motor not doing the mileage.
I would check it over myself and then put the motor on axle stands, remove anything that will cause dampness and remove the radio if possible and remove the steering wheel.
If possible i would even start her every so often. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Park it up, over inflate tyres, put on a trickle charge.

When you get back, put 100miles on her and change the oils. Cheers

Change engine oil and filter, Acids in the oil can attack components in the engine.
