300tdi or Td5?
I'm missing the Defender Embarassed , don't want one for everyday but a play toy that I don't have to worry about the bodywork to much.
Thinking about a base model 90 hard top,in non metallic, but I could do with some thoughts re engine types.
Ive had a TD5 before and loved it but I'm only looking at spending between 3 and 5k! This looks like it will get me a very early td5 or a 300 thats a touch earlier.
In standard form, what is better performance wise and also what is quieter?
Lots of 200tdis about as well but I know nothing about them! I will fit an updated intercooler and get a map
On whatever I buy, but just interested in views Thumbs Up You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things

Depends on what you can find, but if it was me I'd prob try and find a TD5. I've had a 300tdi and it was a great truck but the TD5 is just a great engine and the ones I've had have been faultless. John

For me keeping the 300tdi was the sensible way as ignoring everything else, its a simple engine thats robust. Mike

Still have my 200tdi 90, less goes wrong with them, 300tdi's you need to keep an eye on temp, all we seem to do is fix TD5's. Andy.

Just fit an Engine Watchdog! Potential problems then avoided

lots of decent 200 TDIs about. easy to maintain, no hassle, also easy to tweak if you want but its not TD5 performance.

Andy, interesting you should say this. I briefly had a 300 Tdi 90. Not having had a Tdi before I struggled to get used to it's lack of speed and when driving at 50+, apart from feeling guilty for flogging it, the temp rose into the red. I self diagnosed a bust P-gasket but sold the truck before findin out.

What do find most usual cause of temp issues in 300s?

Steve,

If it is just going to be an off-road toy, I would be tempted to go for a 200Tdi, and spend the extra on toys for it. The 200 isn't hugely different from the 300 and once you have intercooler'd it and done the fuel mod they drive about the same.

If you want an all-round wagon (drive over 50mph), it will have to be a TD5 as then you can re-map it and get some real power out of it.... but naturally you will have to pay more for the motor and then a whole lot more modifying it.

All about the Water pump and it's gasket. I have lost count of the number I have changed!!

Just as advice on that- if changing the pump- pay the extra for a LR one. The army started using Britpart ones that would last about 5,000 miles and then fall apart!!
